I've occasionally expressed this before, but it bears repeating, I think: the Nobel Prize is a strictly Norwegian book-end given out by political appointees, and the fact that anyone still pays attention to it after 1973 is both confounding and asinine.

The Soviets famously 'took' skilled German experts in most fields as reparations. They didn't make them the head of the Soviet Space Program or supreme commander of the Warsaw Pact.

NASA and NATO had no such qualms.
