So fucking upset that I spent half a year or so working 80-90 hour weeks primarily to get Lisa Brown elected to congress. I was in meetings with her every other week, I know she's been to protests before, I know she knows how this works. Utterly despicable

Telling the federal court that IL police can handle Broadview was part of the state's legal strategy against national guard being deployed here.

But it's hard to square that as for the good of protestors or Illinoisans as a whole, when IL police are perfectly willing to drag and beat them anyway.

state police continue to push protesters down 25th street. at one point, cops swarmed a group of people and pushed them to the ground.

multiple people arrested.

Wasn't exactly private and we were pushed together by a certain local journalist but yes. I do feel I should give her credit for having that conversation with me in a very loud bar. I disagree strongly with her on many points and I do not trust her but I respect that she talked with me.

I keep saying im done but electoral politics just keeps pulling me back in

More people keeping the joy alive. Love to see it
Georgie from Star Trek tng holding his hand out as if saying hold up. Text reads "showing up to a protest in a suit and tie to try and get people to respect you.
Then Georgie from Star Trek tng pointing at the camera as if saying this is the way. Text reads "showing up to a protest in an inflatable frog costume to show how absurd this shit is"

October 11 is International Coming Out Day.

I say it's long overdue for people to accept us for who we are. So, let me say this loud and clear:

We're here and WE'RE NERDS!

Oh, and some of us are gay, deal with it. 😎🖖🏻🤟🏻

You know what? Their lives DO depend on it, and that’s the beauty of the classroom, of art and literature and poetry. Been ruminating on this recently: the fascist project wants us to buy into the grey, uniform culture it forces us to regard; to revel in and study art, to *make it*—revolutionary

week 7, in a city under siege for 32 days and counting, and the students who are able to come to class despite the blitz are showing up like their lives depend on those 50 minutes of togetherness, poetry, and big questions
miriamposner.com
IDK, man. School started 2 weeks ago for us, and once again students remind me that they’re so curious and interested in the world and anxious to ask big questions. We hear that these questions are no longer useful or relevant, but wherever that’s coming from, it’s not what students believe.

Like a local hot ones style debate and a pub crawl with local electeds and activists in the span of a month or so? Who else is doing work like that?

Range's politicrawl was a blast last night. Got to see old friends and make new ones. Spokane is so lucky to have range media. The work they do covering local issues is priceless, the community building they do on top of that is just beautiful to behold. If you can, please subscribe to them.

I say this as someone who has worked for very rich clients my whole professional career, the level of isolation from reality that even living in the suburbs can engender is staggering. When you start to see the working class as the SERVICE class, you are alienated from it and also apt to abuse it

No more power, money or discretion for the cops without oversight. And if that means waiting till 2027 to renegotiate, we need to halt all funding increases until then
guyjt.bsky.social
And if you feel your hands are tied until the renegotiation of the guild contract, and you recognize how dangerous they are to the community and to our local electeds (as the mayor agreed with me or claimed to last night) then why would you want them to have more discretion?
guyjt.bsky.social
The city has options and does not have to wait till 2027 to renegotiate with the police guild. They can, for example, challenge the contract through arbitration on Monday morning if they want to. They certainly can stop giving them more power (sorry discretion) and more money piece by piece.
guyjt.bsky.social
And that will only happen if we continue to push on this as hard as we can. So im gonna keep pushing.
guyjt.bsky.social
Our police and city government massively fucked up on June 11th. This is our best opportunity to get some genuine progress on removing some power and getting some accountability from SPD. It will only happen if leaders are willing to lead on it though
guyjt.bsky.social
Lisa Brown said that she was unwilling to talk publically about how the police lied to her or other things they did wrong on the 11th until after the federal trials. This to me feels like a cop out.
guyjt.bsky.social
Passing an aggressive solicitation law is a direct assault on the first ammendment, just as one example. The police set up our mayor and city council to fail by lying to then on june 11th. They want them to fail. Our mayor and city council know this. I don't understand why they won't fight back
guyjt.bsky.social
Not only does creating more laws to crimonalize being unhoused harm the unhoused population while doing nothing to fix any problems, it also dampens speech and gives more power to police. More tools in their belt to harass and arrest people simply for being in public
guyjt.bsky.social
But the idea that their hands are tied when our city council unanimously votes to give the cops more money almost every month. Beyond the issue of funding, they also vote to give the cops more power. I opposed the home starts here ordinances specifically for this reason
guyjt.bsky.social
We need our leaders to lead on this issue. Don't tell me you're with us and understand the threat posed by SPD while continuing to act to give them more money and power. I understand our electeds are working within the constraints of the system and their roles
guyjt.bsky.social
Tired of politicians saying one thing to me in private and a different thing in public. Especially when their actions and voting records do not align with what is said in private. It does not help build trust. If you criticise SPD in private and praise them in public you are just praising them.

Depression is struggling with you." screenshot from Star Trek Deep Space Nine. Martok is speaking. the word box says "the battle against mental illness cannot be won decisively. it is a long campaign against an enemy who never tires, whose forces swell to twice their size whenever you look away. battle against a doe of such magnitude, who occupies your very mind... every moment you survive is a triumph against all odds. there is no more honorable combat."

@lisaforprogress.bsky.social would love a response to this question
guyjt.bsky.social
Doing drugs in public is already a crime. Camping in public is already a crime. Disorderly conduct is already a crime. Genuinely, respectfully, what more discretion specifically do you feel the police need?
mayorspokane.bsky.social
@spokanecity.org is committed to connecting people to the resources they need, while also creating an enforcement mechanism for those who continually choose to violate the law. I am also proposing we give officers more discretion to cite those who repeatedly create public disorder.
guyjt.bsky.social
Our jails are regularly filled to overflowing with unhoused people charged with specifically these crimes, awaiting trial. Clearly, the police are able to arrest them. I'm confused.
