Lon Chaney's hut, halfway up The Lakes trail out of Big Pine Canyon, in California's Eastern Sierra (a great place to stop for a while on one of my fave day hike trails). It's now owned by the NPS.

This area's been fenced off in the last few years and you can't get close to either the tank or the Uniroyal Gal any more. There used to be a kids playground and picnic area at the back of this lot that was a great place to stop along US 395. Oh well…

Pearsonville (California), Hub Cap Capital of The World (there has to be one somewhere, I guess). Plus the giant Uniroyal Woman there as well (she's about three times life-size).

A stark row or two of wind turbines in the huge desert wind farm between Tehachapi and Mojave in California. There are some small Yuccas (Joshua trees) in front of the turbines; in fact, this part of the wind farm is in a small Yucca forest.

Some sort of old black American car is parked on the street in front of a two storey building that contains the Fair Deal Meat Co. There's a rectangular red sign halfway up the facade, and the ground floor windows have lots (or should that be "lot's"?!) of hand-written signs advertising various meats.

I got the name from the USGS topos. It's such a striking landmark there near I-15 that when I first saw it decades ago I had to know more about it. Apparently there's a hiking trail to the top; maybe one day…
