New blog. There’s a new series of Callan - and a new Hunter. So what will Callan make of him, and can we trust a Soviet defector?

I take a look at the first episode of series 2 of Callan: Red Knight, White Knight.

Guys I have not done actual in-depth definitive research on this because I’m not actually writing a piece about “Phwoar” (spellings vary), but I do appreciate the replies helping us identify potential earlier popular culture uses.

Interesting. I’m looking at series 2 of Callan, filmed 1968, broadcast 1969. Definitely feels like a natural development.

The 60s TV occurrence I was looking at used “Cor!” in the script, though it’s pronounced more like “Cwoar!” on screen. I suspect earlier Carry Ons also used “Cor!” and this gradually developed into “Phwoar!” Accents and emphasis choices all changing it.

Unexpected rabbit hole today is discovering that "Phwoar!" was first recorded by the dictionary in 1976, and 1972's Carry On Matron may be its first film appearance.

I thought I'd found an earlier 60s TV use, but it seems "Phwoar!" is firmly a 70s phenomenon.

It would not give me a plain version and that was the least worst option.

Blimey Jeff! How stressful and frustrating. I hope it all goes smoothly now she’s in the best place.

You’ve just reminded me to book the December event in Derby.

What five events defined your childhood?

- Moving house (coerced by the LIE that we’d be able to take my clown wallpaper)
- My dad handing me Five On A Treasure Island
- Sitting down with Doctor Who ‘Rose’
- Finding my dad’s Led Zeppelin II tape
- Stepping out, then running back in a closet

What gave events defined your childhood?

All in the same year (1992):

- My dad leaving.
- The death of my grandparents.
- Bailiffs coming to repossess my home.
- My mother’s breakdown.
- Seeing Ghostwatch on transmission.

Probably should have kept this lighter.

What five events defined your childhood?

Playing Dead Man's Fall on Colin's lawn in the Summer of '76
School holidays with both grandmas
Record shopping in Manchester
First kiss (teeth-clashing incident)
Falling down a band and breaking my arm during an elastic band fight

‘Liking’ this is more like sending a hug to 1992 Jon.

I call it the Exter-Martini.

(Or a Combined Forces)
A 2005 remote control Dalek is missing his eyestalk, but nonetheless valiantly guards a large, visibly chilled martini glass and nibbles bowls containing sour cream and chives pretzels, drinks biscuits and cashew nuts.

It’s 60 years since the BBC’s first programmes for Asian audiences and I’ve been looking forward to catching up on BBC Four’s archive screenings.

Was curious about these types of programmes when I first started exploring old TV schedules. Interested to see their style and approach.

Post you from a different era.

Nottingham Beer Festival, 2014. Just left uni. Terrified to admit that I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. Parents were about to separate messily. But for a while, I could carry on having fun like a student still.

I ran out of DVD releases, then realised the YouTube uploads had episode gaps. I’ve kept meaning to check back and continue at some point.

Ha! Yeah, even when Grange Hill gets better at maintaining regulars, there are rarely proper goodbyes for anyone.
