Definitely not before– they are supposed to be confidential and I think that's important to ensure honesty. When they are very strong I sometimes share them after they have been accepted and the letter won't be re-used, just because it is nice for them to read.

Submitting a grant at this particular moment feels a bit like tossing a rock into the abyss, but hey, at least I am no longer carrying the rock.

Working with upperclass undergraduates and talking about careers in psychology. I feel like I can provide a general overview of things, then get specific with clinical psych. However, I'm at a loss when it comes to other areas.

What are some resources you've used for students? #PsychSciSky

I email: "Completed form attached"
Recipient replies: "Thanks!"
AI email summary: "Thanks was expressed"

Thanks AI, that was so very helpful of you.

Also my first reaction but then I realized it isn’t that different than sweet noodle kugel which is delicious so maybe?!

If there are areas they aren't as strong in I'm honest but frame it in terms of areas for growth + document any progress I've seen (e.g., writing skills improving but still developing, taking steps toward more independence). If major areas of concern I tell the student I'll need to mention them. 3/3

For undergrads in the lab, I ask the grad students/staff they work with most closely to send me bullet points which I then flesh out in the letter. I try to give as much concrete behavioral evidence as possible (eg don't just say they have good communication skills, give specific examples). 2/3

The most important thing it took me a while to learn is to only agree to write LoRs for students I can write a strong one for, for their sake and mine. Only in a large class? Definitely no. In seminar? Maybe, but think about if you have stronger options. Did you work in my lab? Definitely yes. 1/3

I'd say only OK for family/very close friends who will pitch in on final preparations/hold the fort while you freshen up, and only if arranged in advance. Otherwise a little late is "on time", with " a little" defined in very culturally specific ways ranging from 5 min to half an hour.

Oh now it's definitely coming directly for you Emily. Better repent and propitiate the storm gods.

My lab is recruiting a PhD student or Postdoc to join an exciting BSF project on working memory and prediction. Please RT, spread the word, and DM to apply

Come help me and my colleagues submit grants! 👇
I promise we are really appreciative of our grants admins and let them know it

Here too– three days in the 80s and then a fast drop as the cold front came through. We're just about on average here for a first frost though.

Yes if you have a food dehydrator- air drying seems to cause it to lose a lot of flavor but a faster drying in the dehydrator and then airtight storage helps

Oh no! Hope it made it through the night. Surprised you haven’t had a frost already there- is this unusually late?

Already ate tonight's up (tortellini with pesto, tomatoes and peppers), but here's an earlier pesto pizza (my favorite way to eat pesto). I squirrel away pesto in the freezer all summer so I never run out in the winter.

Only a few! Plus raspberries. Both make a second late summer crop that continues until it frosts.
hannahrsnyder.bsky.social
4 cups pesto (most I’ll freeze), dehydrator full of the rest of the basil to dry, and two pints of pickled peppers

Salvage operation before potential first frost tonight

Spread the word: I'm looking to recruit a PhD student for Fall 2026 to @ucsb.bsky.social! Reach out if you are applying this cycle and hoping to study infant and child social cognition, specifically expectations about friendship and/or groups. Bonus: live in paradise! And.. 1/3

I mean, it seems appropriate to the state of things.

Still looks delicious. Who knows, cake you eat by the handful could be the next big dessert trend!
