Birds don’t count as animals?

🪶 Bonus content: never get tired of this trick, they can make their entire head disappear if they get cold
A wild turkey tom on some brown grass. He’s withdrawn his head into his plumage, so there’s just a whorl of feathers where his neck should be. We’ve got a big storm coming, so this is their version of hunkering down.

🪶 I think this lad (the Bruce) has the pox, he don’t look so good
A wild turkey tom standing on some brown grass. He’s got brown spots on his head, like a rotten fruit. You can’t tell that well from this angle, but his head is pretty swollen, too.

I saw 7 turkeys today! I couldn’t get them all in one shot. Great photo!

Ages ago i used to answer phones for the state for some license verification line, lots of out-of-state calls. These were the ones most often screwed up:
Worcester
Stoughton
Billerica
Peabody
Reading
Athol
Weymouth
Woburn
Leominster
Haverhill
Methuen
Scituate
And Carlisle

My main experience lies with turkeys, but i think a lot of animals know instinctively that (most) dogs will die for you. They will absolutely sacrifice themselves to mess up whatever is threatening you. Turkeys aren’t scared of cats, but they’ll run even from the smallest dogs.

What, you’ve never heard of the Boston Lump?

They also like cemeteries. Quiet, usually big old trees that can support them, lots of grass and plantings to hunt for bugs etc. But they can make it anywhere as long as there’s a bit of grass.

West Oakland has a feral turkey population and if you, a relative newcomer, point this out to someone who's lived here a while they'll be like "yeah of course why wouldn't we"

Today, in #MyWildlife:

I just looked out the window from my spot on the couch to find Helen eyeballing me from the edge of the gully.

I think we may have a new member of the Nighthawk Hill menagerie. 🤔😍🦃

Photo of a single female wild turkey sitting on the branch of a pine tree. She has her head turned sideways, looking at the photographer. Behind her is a canopy of green pines with dark mountains in the distance beneath a grey sky.

She was still happily roosting at 8am.

Definitely unsalted— and good tip on the bread!

I sing to them all, so no worries there— I’ll remind her she has a good home to return to.
Photo of a wild turkey on the branch of a pine tree in the morning sun. She has her back to the camera but her head is turned and the sunlight reveals her red wattle and bluish-grey head in profile. Behind her is a sea of brilliant green pine trees.

Wild turkeys have been outside my window for some time now. Mama knows I'm here, been keeping an eye on me as they preen. I'm just sending safety signals, softly letting her know what an honor it is that she trusts me. (Alt later.)

Feed them the food a Turkey would eat. Whole corn is easy
