Thanks. I think most of the misunderstandings were legitimate. What I said was too similar sounding to ideas I don’t agree with, and I failed to see it until I received some of the feedback.

I did a poor job of defining “useful work”. What I mean is that an individual’s activity has to feel useful to them. Valuable. Without the need to work to survive, society will need to reorient itself so that people learn new ways to find more personally fulfilling activities.

I did a poor job of defining “useful work”. What I mean is that an individual’s activity has to feel useful to them. Valuable. Without the need to work to survive, society will need to reorient itself so that people learn new ways to find more personally fulfilling activities.

I’m 100% in on all those things. The socioeconomic shift to that is a big job, and money alone won’t create it. Sam and Elon talk about the utopia without acknowledging the hard parts.

I agree with this. “AI will replace most jobs” isn’t my vision of the future, it’s people like Elon and Altman. I don’t think current technology will come close, but if it does, we should be prioritizing the people it replaces.

That’s fantastic. I define “playing with your kids” as useful work. Many/most useful things in life aren’t paid labor.

I think we should get housing, food and healthcare for free. Society will not just instantly become a utopia once we give them those things. But people need more than that in life.

My comment is based on what happens if Elon and Altman replace most workers with AI/robots. They don’t have a plan to even make UBI happen, but it’ll take more than just money. It’s a huge shift. Most people on UBI do some work, but what if there’s no work to do?

This whole discussion started with the notion that the “AI will eliminate all jobs” people (like Elon and Altman) haven’t thought through about what will happen to all the people they unemploy. I think the problem can’t be solved by UBI alone, and most of them don’t even think that far.

I’d love that world. But it’ll be a huge adjustment for people. I don’t think the current AI wave will eliminate work, but if it does, and there isn’t some thought how to help people adjust, it’ll be an issue.

I’m 100% in favor of UBI. It’s a start, but putting large swaths of people out of work is a bigger problem than just paying their bills.

Some of the reason I think the UBI recipients work is because it’s not enough money. I think they would end up working even if it was. UBI paid for by AI companies isn’t going to give people enough money to do whatever they want, just enough so they can survive.

UBI experiments exist in the same socioeconomic system that we currently have. Replacing most labor with AI/robots would completely change that system. People that get UBI still work, but what happens when there are no jobs to get?

Only this administration would go through the effort to make already suffering people’s lives worse. This prohibition against different prices is meant to protect SNAP beneficiaries from being charged MORE, but to this government it’s a weapon to use against them.

The USDA sent an email to grocery stores telling them they are prohibited from offering special discounts to customers affected by the SNAP funding lapse.
I'm aware of at least 2 stores that had offered struggling customers a discount, then withdrew it after receiving this email

I think that people will need to reorient their lives, and that many people will struggle with it. People spend a huge amount of their lives either learning how to make money and then trying to do that. It would be a huge shift, and it will take time for people to adjust.
