Reasons to Teach High School English when the World is on Fire

Black girls in advanced academics who write literary analyses about “Their Eyes Were Watching God.” Queer kids who call the English Department The Fruit Factory. Allowables and Legacies by Nikki Giovanni.

For two years, the world has watched as Palestinian parents held their beheaded children and gathered their bodies in trash bags. They have been displaced, bombed, and starved to death and this cowardly, nothing-burger of a statement can’t even humanize the extent of their suffering.

Thanks, Obama.

My statement on Middle East peace
A white graphic with a blue border includes the following text:

My Statement on Middle East Peace
October 9, 2025

After two years of unimaginable loss and suffering for Israeli families and the people of Gaza, we should all be encouraged and relieved that an end to the conflict is within sight; that those hostages still being held will be reunited with their families; and that vital aid can start reaching those inside Gaza whose lives have been shattered. More than that, though, it now falls on Israelis and Palestinians, with the support of the U.S. and the entire world community, to begin the hard task of rebuilding Gaza – and to commit to a process that, by recognizing the common humanity and basic rights of both peoples, can achieve a lasting peace.

❤️ love this poem for exactly this reason—it is a mainstay in our classroom now. Absolutely incredible.

Grateful to @poetrichardblanco.bsky.social for “My Father in English.”

As a Texas teacher in 2025, exposing students to stories of folks who made sacrifices that will impact generations of their family feels especially important.

(Shared with permission from the student)
Now my most favorite lines are "thank you/gracias for surrendering the past tense/ of
your life so that I might conjugate myself here/in the present of this country" (lines 29-31). Those
are words I wish to tell my parents one day due to them giving up their life in Mexico to be able
to create my life here in the US. They gave me more than what they ever had growing up and I
will always be forever grateful.

It IS better!

I’ve taken to saying “meh” when they give me a mediocre answer to something and then helping them workshop a better one!
heymrsbond.com
They’re not lying; they often ask “do you want a regular answer or a Bond-level answer?”

But MAN, nobody will have my back like kids in front of the principal 😂😂😂

Principal comes in for an eval.

Students are in groups to grade a thesis statement. One group is frustrated and when I ask why, their group leader says, in front of principal,

“We’re just trying to figure out what to contribute to the discussion. You always expect such thorough answers.”

😂😭

I feel like I’ve been drowning lately; there are fewer and fewer pockets of air.

So when @msespo.bsky.social asked if she could send me this book, I was touched and grateful. Both Christine and Nikki Giovanni are pockets of air. 💛

At some point one of the Gestapo is going to pull the trigger in a crowd and America will be forced into a place it may not be able to ever fully recover from.

The fascists are going to end up killing a lot of people before this is all said and done.

I’m going to say it again, generative AI and the push for it to be used in every Avenue of learning and education is because generative AI literally is a weapon for knowledge destruction not a knowledge creation tool and silicon valleys goal is to monetize and gate off all of human knowledge
