This sounds very familiar to the Islamic figure of "Al-Masih ad-Dajjal," of whom I will write about more in a minute.

can again be offered. Halfway into this peace, the lawless man will violate it and perform the "abomination of desolation," offering instead pagan sacrifices in the holiest of holies, and declare himself to be God. Christians of course interpret this as the work of Satan.

Commentators have identified the lawless man with historical figures (Caligula, Nero, the Catholic church, etc.). A minority (the dispensationalists) view this person as an actual coming figure who will broker a seven-year peace with the Nation of Israel and set up a new Temple, where sacrifices...

writes to the Thessalonians and says, "brothers, sisters, we know we cannot be in the eschaton because the Second Coming cannot happen until the man of lawlessness is revealed and the restrainer ("Katechon") is removed.

See, apocalyptic literature (which we have a TON of in the Dead Sea Scrolls) was super duper popular in the Levant at the time, from Jewish apocalypticism to gnostic views to Manicheans, Mandaeans, Sarmatians, and early Christians. So Paul, trying to standardized Christian doctrine and practice...

The other reference that many take to refer an Antichrist is the "man of sin" or "man of lawlessness" referred to by Paul in 2 Thess. 2:3-10. The Church in Thessaly at the time had embraced apocalypticism, and were said to have begun acting as if they were in the coming eschaton.

The identification of Daniel's "abomination of desolation" with an anti-Messiah figure is a later Christian gloss on Daniel's prophecy, and not one that is embraced by Daniel's co-religionists (we'll get to Jewish eschatology in a minute).

The only other quasi-references to Antichrist in the Bible come from the vision of Daniel and a Pauline Epistle. In Daniel's vision, which speaks of eschatology, he is said to have equated some future figure with Antiochus IV Epiphanes, who instituted pagan sacrifices for Jewish ones in the Temple.

The orthodox Christian interpretation of the Book of Revelation is called "preterism," in that it refers, in coded language, to events occurring in the first two centuries of the Common Era, and the "beast from the sea" is commonly though of as the Roman Emperor Nero, who persecuted Christians.

perform "great signs and wonders" and deceive the people. And in the Apocalypse of John of Patmos, he describes a "beast from the Sea," given authority by the Great Dragon, who will rule the world for 42 months and speak great blasphemies and boasts.

The term "antikristos" itself occurs twice in the Christian Bible, solely in the Epistles of John, where it refers not to a single individual but rather the spirit of unbelievers. The term pseudokristos or "false Christ" appears in Matthew and Mark, where Jesus warns of false prophets who will...

because popular right-wing nutbar Christian authors (yes, you, LaHaye, inspiration for Sanderson's L. Bob Rife) have made up this notion of the Antichrist as some coming Manichean battle between good and evil. It makes for lowest-common-denominator storytelling, but...

Most of what you probably believe about "the Antichrist" is filtered through pop culture like "the Omen" and not, you know, actual theology, because the real theology of "Antichrist" is way more boring and less "son of the Devil and a jackal" nonsense. BUT...

It's not weird that he's obsessed with eschatology and the katechon; that's the sort of stuff midwits like Thiel eat up. What's weirder is we're treating it like "oh haha look at this weird thing he believes" instead of having a theological scholar school people on how messed up this belief is.
hipcrimevocab.net
OK, gang, Peter Thiel is a midwit weirdo who lucked into a billion dollars. He is not some great thinker, and in fact, is as susceptible, if not moreso, so absolute bullshit than your average person.

Why Peter Thiel's Antichrist Conspiracy Might Backfire on Trump
Trump's close ally, Peter Thiel, has a strange theory about the Antichrist, and here's how the president fits into play.

I considered quote-tweeting or responding to this post but exercised self-control but did not. As a result, someone else has to suffer. Sorry, it's just they way things work, like that videotape with the Hot Topic girl.
