Oh yeah. Had a friend born and raised in Brownsville (Tx-Mx border) and she moved to Seattle after grad school. The friend-group emails we got during her first year there… echoes of “the dark, the dark.” I think she actually bought a light box.

Before/ After #Melissa damage in Black River, Jamaica. This is what Cat 5 hurricane damage looks like in a direct hit.
Some chasers on the ground are comparing the damage to a high end EF-4 #tornado
It’s likely gusts exceeded 200 mph esp since it was a strengthening storm at landfall.

The three Category 5 storms of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season.
Car battery decided it was done working this morning.

Mine also running dangerously low this time of year.

The government of Jamaica has set up a portal for contributing to official relief efforts. I will update this thread if anything analogous opens up for Haiti, Cuba, or the DR

Gusts over 200+ mph. How do you even begin to prepare for that? 🙏🏽
Melissa, now with sustained winds of 175 mph (280 km/hr) and capable of gusts to 260+ mph (425+ km/hr) on windward hilltops, 40" (1000 mm) of rain, and a 13 ft (4 m) storm surge, has started the feared turn to the northwest. First NW then north is the forecast. #Jamaica #HurricaneAlert

"The NOAA aircraft left the storm early after
experiencing severe turbulence in the southwestern eyewall."

These men and women are not being paid due to the US government shutdown. Not to mention that according to AOML's director emeritus Robert Atlas, they are down 40-50% staff. #Melissa

Venice Bakery is remembering those that have died in ICE custody this year by adding them to their community altar for Dia de Los Muertos.

Was curious about this - appreciate the rec.
Several FL schools have switched to Simple Syllabus, a 3rd-party syllabus template web program, to comply already. It was required for a handful of core Gen Ed courses before. Makes syllabi very impersonal (there goes another set of prof. dev workshops) &I've seen some creative addendums/workarounds
Oof. This is a massive storm. It’s far enough from us in FL but I have this muscle memory of dreading going to sleep and waking up to the next forecast. Safety & support to all impacted.
"Extensive infrastructural damage, long-duration power and communication outages, and isolation of communities are expected." — expected impacts from #Melissa in #Jamaica according to NHC, which adds, "Seek shelter now." At 5pm Sunday, the #hurricane is Cat 4, winds 145 mph.

The National Hurricane Center now forecasts Melissa to reach Category 5 strength before striking Jamaica head on late Monday or early Tuesday. An exceedingly dire, catastrophic forecast unfolding as Melissa crawls and rapidly intensifies on the doorstep of Jamaica.
Atlantic Hurricane Melissa Advisory Number 18
...MELISSA LIKELY STARTING TO RAPIDLY INTENSIFY AND EXPECTED TO BECOME A MAJOR HURRICANE TOMORROW... ...LIFE-THREATENING AND CATASTROPHIC FLASH FLOODING AND LANDSLIDES EXPECTED IN PORTIONS OF SOUTHERN HISPANIOLA AND JAM...
Additional Details Here.
Yes! Should be! I'm tracking on live blogs... Took the plunge and cut most streaming services due to various political shenanigans - so no live footy for me right now, unless I can find on Spanish channels/VPNs. Sadly is good prep for upcoming World Cup nonsense which will be on FOX in US.
Forecasts for #Melissa do not look good for our Caribbean friends in Jamaica and parts of Hispaniola. Let's hope the intensification cycle is at the lower end of what's possible.
Having contractors work on my porch and am close to asking for their Latin Jazz playlist (!)

Always a roll of the dice with contractors’ soundtracks but theirs is top notch.
I think it was just that he showed up first on a Google search, but she did present well on him and the band. But not what I expecting! 😄
You learn something every semester.

This term I learned I should specify for my 20th c class that Richard Wright on the assignment list refers to the author of Native Son and not the Pink Floyd co-founder.

Noted.

Venice used to have a second church on Piazza San Marco: S. Geminiano designed by Sansovino you can see in this Canaletto painting. It was kind of a big deal; shows up in a ton of artwork. It was destroyed by Napoleon — to build a ballroom.

Napoleon occupied Venice 1806-1814, eight years.

Bees going wild on my young Key Lime tree this morning
Yes! I received an all caps message that really unnerved me at first… and then just a lot of people needing reassurance they weren’t penalized somehow.
