Alternatively, it's a variation on "Opinion, Size, Age, Shape, Color, Origin, Material, and Purpose"

And since Sam is bigger than Dean, he comes first, even if Dean is older.

One could argue for opinion, and the show does have Sam being slightly more of a lead than Dean (tho its like 51-49)

I will say, I don't know that the Feds coming after S&D were great episodes, but that might be the execution of the ideas as much as the format of it.

I mean, they even use handcuffs throughout the show on Demons, Angels, even on Death Himself at one point. Magically enchanted handcuffs, sure, but like, how many Monster Hunters use handcuffs?

Outside of the bedroom, cuffs are a Law Enforcement thing.

In Supernatural, they aren't exactly inside the law, but, they are, effectively, Spooky Cops.
