Dan Heng knows that there’s more to it. He knows the story the same as anyone else. Jing Yuan was wholly complicit in the plight of Dan Feng, but he was also the reason that his sentence was considerably lessened. “Who was he to you?”
Jing Yuan takes a moment to answer. “A brother. A friend. A lover. Dan Feng was many things to me, but never all of them at once.”
How messy.
“I am not him,” Dan Heng reminds him for a third time.
“I don’t want you to be.”
Suddenly, the space between is suffocating, but when Jing Yuan dips closer, Dan Heng doesn’t push away. They share breaths, mouths nearly touching. Dan Heng tastes the sharp tang of that alcohol just from his near proximity.
“Is this alright?” Jing Yuan must have the patience of a saint, to sit there and ask.

As punishment for his past life’s crimes, Dan Heng has been denied relief throughout his long imprisonment. Newly ascended Arbiter-General Jing Yuan intends to change that.

Excerpt: Dan Heng manages to get back on his knees on his own, and he scrambles away from Jing Yuan. He bows his head, hiding his face beneath his hair. Jing Yuan can see his arms shaking from where they’re bound behind him. He’s ashamed. He’s ashamed of what he’s done, but it isn’t his fault. Jing Yuan reaches out a hand in an attempt to comfort him, but he flinches away. Jing Yuan frowns. Then he makes up his mind.

“You have nothing to be ashamed of.” He rises to his feet and begins to strip out of his armor. “What’s been done to you is cruel and unconscionable. And so…”

Dan Heng looks up when Jing Yuan drops his trousers to the floor, followed by his underthings.

“If you are made to bear your body to me, then it’s only fair that I do the same.”
