In a panic, he tries to rise, but Kafka’s hands bear down on his shoulders. “Listen, Bladie. Relax.”

But the sight of it never became a comfortable one, never entirely settled into the darkest corners of his mind. The art of killing paints with broad strokes, but it’s the details that have true staying power: the immediate stench of rot and steel, the sounds of flesh tearing and reweaving, the weight of the weapon as it slides from between cracked ribs so desperate to reunite. Dan Heng’s fingers twitch, compelled to search for his spear. Instead, he clenches them into fists. He doesn’t need to kill today. Blade is already dying.
