This could also be said about the sewing machine.

There are strong arguments against LLMs: that they make us stupid, that they are instruments of intellectual control. But technologies that make jobs redundant will always create the potential for other jobs.

Humans succeed by adapting to change.

"Is SB 79 all good news? No, it’s bad news that it was necessary. It’s bad news that in the midst of a historic crisis of homelessness and housing affordability, so many California local governments were still happy to wring their hands and demand that the problem be solved somewhere else."

People protesting in Portland against the federal show of force are dressing up as inflatable animals. Here's why.

Barbed wire protecting a large patch of nothing, right on the beach in downtown Ventura, California. If we taxed land instead of buildings, people would live and work here.

This applies to much more than walking: "The human ability to adapt is the key to our spectacular success on this planet. Our problem is that the people who lead our public conversations, our elites of wealth and opinion, are often some of the least adaptable people on earth."

This is a good post. We can build places to minimize exposure to elements while preserving walkability in any climate. We don’t have to build for hours long strolls. Think in terms of only needing to be outside for a few minutes, which is fine even in a Phoenix summer or Minneapolis winter.

London's Victoria and Albert Museum feels like a grandparents attic for the entire British Empire. The quantity and crowding feel like part of the point.

It's increasingly clear that the president lives in a constructed bubble of unreality designed by aides who are manipulating him in order to take control of US policy. Seems like an important story - wish media would cover it.

Agencies around the country are being subjected to massive fiscal cliffs. If your agency is in the crosshairs, consider giving your time or money to local advocates. Both are way more valuable than you’d think!

Here’s an excellent piece from the legend @humantransit.bsky.social on the topic.

Anyone read anything… disgustingly out of touch and arguably dangerous about Portland lately?
A headline from the New York Times that reads: “What Happens When Socialists Are in Charge? Portland Offers a Glimpse.” A headline from the Atlantic that reads: “Portland’s ‘War Zone’ Is Like Burning Man for the Terminally Online.”
