Difficulty = capability Vs barrier.
Disability = mismatched interaction between capability and barrier.
Accessibility = avoiding unnecessary mismatch between capability and barrier.

Ah fantastic, that's what we hope for so very glad to hear that! Cc @tarav.bsky.social

In honor of spooky month, share a 4 word horror story that only someone in your profession would understand

I'll go first: Six page commercial lease.
ianhamilton.bsky.social
Yep that's entirely valid. However also I'm sure you can understand that being someone who is involved in a lot of accessibility awards - running, establishing, advising, judging - I don't appreciate the joke ☺️
ianhamilton.bsky.social
But also accessibility by design is a hot topic, and accessibility award worth its salt takes it into account

No, they are not more likely to, 0% is not more likely than 0%.

Another very important measure is ensuring online is an equitable an experience as possible rather than a secondary thing to the in person event, particularly as there are plenty of people who simply can't attend in-person events no matter what measures are in place.
ianhamilton.bsky.social
There are other measures in place too, such as bookings being capped at way under capacity, & using very spaced out cabaret layout. A number of attendees do mask. We've had 8 confs since lockdowns lifted, so far 0 reported infections at the event, and multiple infectious people caught by the testing

That's what I mean, that dyslexia accessibility is more complex than swapping the font.
ianhamilton.bsky.social
..it's entirely possible for a text using sans serif to be for example in full caps at a tiny size on a busy background with loads of characters per line, reduced spacing between lines and letters, etc.
ianhamilton.bsky.social
That doesn't mean opendyslexic is useless, it does help some dyslexic people. But a small minority. There's a misconception that all you need to do to make something dyslexia-friendly is swap the font, which is indeed a misconception...
ianhamilton.bsky.social
So what chart is showing is that for most dyslexic people the most helpful choice is a simple highly familiar sans serif, like the operating system fonts.
ianhamilton.bsky.social
It's that they're actually very unhelpful for most people who fall under the dyslexia umbrella youtu.be/h8IOqUl1zII?... ...
Chart showing open dyslexic performing worse than every other font in the test for both 'no dyslexic' and 'strong dyslexic'

I mean you literally said "win an award for accessibility by having a menu in your game that lets players make subtitles 1% bigger", but sure OK. Which awarded games are you thinking of specifically?

Just opened #silenthillf and I'm so excited - but dear god. Anyone in #gamedev - DO NOT use filters to change colors and add accessibility, change _only_ gameplay colors specifically.

CVD Filters do not work, and break the experience. Grass becomes orange etc. We want to experience the vision too.
ianhamilton.bsky.social
Yep, CB inaccessibility is a design issue not an engineering issue, fix the problem rather than try to hack the result

I don’t think Ubisoft gets nearly enough credit for how many accessibility, HUD, control and gameplay options they put into their games.

You can almost tweak everything exactly how you want almost every game they bring out. That’s incredibly difficult to do yet they keep making it happen
