Marina Menga emphasized the need for scientists and science communicators to better explain concepts like uncertainty. She also highlighted the strong potential for telling stories showing how climate impacts are connected to other aspects of our lives such as health and migration.
iiasa.ac.at
Holly Simpkin noted that communicators & scientists need to tell stories backed by robust science about what the world could look like in the future. This should include successes achieved so far – positive change is happening, and everyone can contribute to building the world we want to live in.
iiasa.ac.at
Katharine Mansell explained that it is vital for scientists to distill the essence of their findings, and that there is an enormous task ahead of us to effectively communicate the implications of overshoot and the actions needed to deal with it.

🗝️ Key takeaways:

Lisa Palmer said that narratives should aim to provide meaning to the scientific processes or topics being discussed. When we make topics more personal & relatable, we build bridges to a place where we can inspire the actions needed to achieve the world we want.

Their closing panel session on Day 3, moderated by Cecilia Keating from @carbonbrief.org, explored how narrative and stories can explore the promises of net zero, the scientific evidence for net negative emissions, & how surpassing 1.5°C doesn’t change the near-term imperative to cut emissions fast.

At last week’s #OvershootConference at IIASA, Journalist in Residence, Lisa Palmer, along with science communicators Katharine Mansell, Holly Simpkin, and Marina Menga were tasked with gaining a better understanding of the narratives that can put the science into dialogue with a range of audiences.

🎬 And that’s a wrap on the #OvershootConference!

A huge thank you to our Scientific Steering Committee, Organizing Committee, and every single speaker and participant whose insights, questions, and collaboration made this event such a success.

✨ The reflections sent a powerful message: overshoot is not just a scientific scenario, it is a lived reality that compounds risks, deepens inequities, & raises questions of justice. Responding requires courage, collaboration, & commitment across all levels of society.

🔹 Theme 8: Legal and justice implications of overshoot
International law provides important tools but also has limits. There is an urgent need for legal innovation and for scientific evidence to be more effectively harnessed in advancing climate justice.
iiasa.ac.at
🔹 Theme 7: Loss and Damage
Losses and harms compound under overshoot requiring responses that integrate human-development, uncertainty, and lived realities.
iiasa.ac.at
🔹 Theme 6: Adaptation & adaptation limits under overshoot
The level, timing and duration of peak warming influences adaptation limits and needs of ecological and social systems, as well as effectiveness and costs of adaptation options.
iiasa.ac.at
🔹 Theme 7: Loss and Damage
Losses and harms compound under overshoot requiring responses that integrate human-development, uncertainty, and lived realities.
iiasa.ac.at
🔹 Theme 5: Overshoot legacy and tipping elements
Overshoot risks triggering cascading and potentially irreversible changes. The only way to minimize these risks is to limit both the scale and duration of overshoot.
iiasa.ac.at
🔹 Theme 4: Climate impact (ir)reversibility
Even if global temperatures decline after overshoot, there is no going back on various biophysical climate impacts, as well as some social, economic, political, and cultural systems that could face new vulnerabilities.
