OK, quick amendment: I still do not know what the hell to make of “Night Drive.” As a youth group kid, it icked me out. As a grown ass adult with healthy attitude towards sex… It just kind of sounds weird. Jim bringing back his raspy “Static Prevails” voice doesn’t help.

But “Futures?” Side A is solid gold. There’s a sense that these songs were all written by adults who have been through some shit. “Drugs or Me” is the only surefire skip because the lyrics are kinda silly, but most days I can still make space for it.

“Bleed American” loses a lot of steam on side 2, and also feels weirdly juvenile in spots. Sorry, but “The Middle” was written for middle schoolers.

“Clarity” deserves props for its creative conviction, but has lousy structure.

“Chase This Light,” has no flow. Every track wants to be the single.

SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level. SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this. The new versions aren’t even bad, but the small differences in performances, mixing, guitar tones all add up to an extremely distracting experience. And that’s before getting jumpscared by the voice of some other emo singer.

Logic board on my Mac Mini crapped out. Apple care covered the repair, but now Logic freezes when trying to scan all of my plugins. Something tells me this could've been avoided if every dev didn't insist on having their own personal software manager that also refuses to launch properly.
