Fun to be part of this with the two Pieters + team. Double the Pieter, double the insight into forest microclimate monitoring

Fibre-optic cables (also used for internet) can be used as a novel means of continuous measurements of #forest #microclimate in space and over time, at 25-cm spatial and 1-minute temporal resolution

No photo, but bumped into a Quail on my @btobirds.bsky.social Heathland Bird Survey on the Lizard—last visit it was a Hoopoe. Here's a Dartford Warbler from the same square as consolation

Cornwall in May: the sea’s still freezing, but at least the cliffs look nice

Great find! Is that why you were late for our lab group meeting? I am suprised you turned up at all. I wouldn't have! For future reference - finding rarities is an 100% acceptable excuse for missing meetings:-)

Green-breasted Pitta! Just 27 years of searching forest in Uganda to finally see one of these, and then like buses two pop along

My final PhD chapter published in FEE (Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment): re-mapping Köppen-Geiger climate zones, but now using microclimate! Very excited to have this one out:

"Next Monday, I’ll take on the #esiChallengeOfTheMonth: “The Art and Science of Prediction.” How can we predict environmental impacts when a butterfly’s wing flap alters its body temperature by more than 500 years of climate change? Find out this and more here: www.exeter.ac.uk/research/ins...

A great write-up, albeit with worrying conclusions, of Joe's recent paper which forms part of a special issue in Phil Trans B commemorating the life and work of the brilliant Georgina Mace. Link to full paper in post👇

Co-occurring species have similar tolerances to rising temperatures, suggesting communities will decline abruptly due to climate change. I wrote about our latest paper for The Conversation - check it out! 🧪🌏🥵 theconversation.com/shared-heat-...
Shared heat tolerance leaves ecosystems at risk of sudden climate-driven collapse – new research
Different species often malfunction at the same temperature limit.

🚨New paper 🚨We argue that abrupt biodiversity losses can be driven by populations sharing similar tolerances to warming 🦋🌎🥵. Out now in @royalsocietypublishing.org. Summary thread below 🧵

Every year, I do a bit of a round-up of the the birds seen on my local patch - the Lizard Peninsula. 2024 was quite a good year, but then actually most are: www.lizardbirds.net/post/2024-ye.... What will 2025 bring?

1/ Great news! 🎉BTO, JNCC and RSPB are making decades of Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) data freely available for everyone in the conservation and research community. This includes over 7 million records! 📝 Find out more ⬇️ or read the paper➡️ bit.ly/_BBSData #Ornithology #UKBirding

That will be Great Spooted Woodpecker - the Lesser Spotted Woidpecker's larger cousin. They're doing OK in the UK too. Lesser Spotted don't occur in Ireland

It's been ages since I last saw a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker in the UK. When I lived in Norfolk, they used to be a bird you’d just bump into from time to time. Sobering to see how quickly they're vanishing from our landscapes though. Really should look for one sometime while I have the chance

I'm thrilled to have had the opportunity to champion Silver-studded Blues in this wonderful new film celebrating the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site. Cornwall's former mining sites provide an important refuge for several of our most threatened butterfly species.
