If the Norwegians had a sense of humour, they'd give Obama a second peace prize today.

“I tried to help OpenAI raise some money by starting a GoFundMe for them, but those fundraising campaigns are capped at a mere billion dollars. Which doesn’t even pay for snacks at OpenAI.”

If true (that FDI heading to the US is increasing), this means that current account deficit is about to increase or that other capital flows will go in the opposite direction. If current account deficit increases, it might boost growth somewhere else.
America is sucking in growth from the rest of the world
Global FDI is flowing west — this may well be one of Trump’s biggest legacies

It seems like, increasingly, business models just consist of ways for firms to exploit/monetize human irrationality (rather than to provide value).

What can/should I read on this subject?

All else equal — ceteris paribus, as the economists say — if you were to just grab that expensive watch from the jewelry store counter and walk out the door, you'd be better off.

Only all else would not be equal.

Lots of data-centric political punditry is basically "grab the watch".

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

"we could call this a…muscular, socialism-inflected version of antitrust. Rather than (or in addition to) playing constant…whack-a-mole against market concentration…the govt steps in directly and creates the competition it wants, either thru subsidies or outright state-owned firms." @ryanlcooper.com

“In smaller courses, the difference in the quality of…discussion where 70% of the students have done 50% of the readings and one in which 20% have done 10% of the readings is obvious in the same way…a cold Coke tastes different than lukewarm spit. The former is no Chablis, but it is more palatable.”

Another excellent piece by Professor Musgrave. In my own undergrad "Enlightenment" seminar this semester, only one student had heard of Robinson Crusoe [which I was first assigned in 8th grade]. I asked her to summarize; she told the plot of Tom Sawyer! musgrave.substack.com/p/a-post-lit...

"Irrationalism also depends on the cult of action for action’s sake. Action being beautiful in itself, it must be taken before, or without, any previous reflection. Thinking is a form of emasculation. Therefore culture is suspect insofar as it is identified with critical attitudes."

One of the major problems we are going to have going forward is that search makes is extremely heavily biased towards recent updates / info / pages. Like monumentally so.

It’s very challenging to search for anything that happened in the even recent past.
