“Yeah, I know ma,” he said. “You’re just looking out for me, I appreciate that, I really do. But think about it, ma. I declined going with you to bridge night because he was there. I’ve barely talked to him since school. Why would I spend an entire day with him? I don’t even think we’ve got anything in common any more.” As expected, she didn’t acknowledge his reasoning with an answer, but instead changed the topic entirely to ask about how his drive home had been. The conversation fell into neutral smalltalk territory after that and twenty minutes later, the call ended. For a while, Reiner sat there, staring at the screen. All alarm bells in his body were still going off, and he had no interest in his popcorn, the movie, and most of all in being alone. For the first time since he moved to the city, Reiner lamented not having made any close friends. Picking up his phone, he first pulled up his thread with Jean, closed it to open the one with Bertholdt instead only to tap back again. It was Friday night. Who did he even think he was? He didn’t have the right to interrupt them, knowing that they most likely were with their boyfriends. He knew that was what he would be doing with a Friday night, if he hadn’t been painfully single.

Sex scenes are almost never "gratuitous" or "unnecessary." You learn things about characters and relationships during sex that you can't really learn any other way, such as whether they're into fisting.
