Reminder that not only do library systems have physical media (& many also lend tools, electronics etc), your library card may give you access to streamers Kanopy and Hoopla. We just watched Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation of The Rainmaker via a hoopla the other night. Pretty good!
“As prices for streaming subscriptions continue to soar and finding movies to watch, new and old, is becoming harder as the number of streaming services continues to grow, people are turning to the unexpected last stronghold of physical media: the public library.”
The Last Video Rental Store Is Your Public Library
Audio-visual librarians are quietly amassing large physical media collections amid the IP disputes threatening select availability.

NEFANDO was fascinating, though I don't know if I could ever recommend it to anyone - it depicts some of the most vile shit imaginable, but the writing (translated by Sarah Booker) is surprising, insightful, sometimes transcendently gorgeous.
... and now, having apparently broken the wizard's curse, I'm back to reading NEFANDO by Mónica Ojeda, which is one of the bleakest and most fucked-up books I have ever read and you know that's saying something.
My poor exhausted attention span has been leaving a lot of (objectively excellent) books unfinished lately, but I scarfed down the gay hockey porn book in like 2.5 hours and it felt great.

there's a line in this book where a character thinks "I wonder if I'll be brave enough to write poorly" and I yelped out loud because "be brave, write badly" has been my motto for the last ten years.

I just saw another post about how bad Grace fucked up in Sinners, but I've never seen anyone mention the obvious parallel: Smoke sparing Stack. I mean, we don't think Stack lived all those decades as a vampire without killing anyone, do we?

I think it would be fun if writers who love language started intentionally writing more strangely as AI flattens written "content" into a mono-voice. it would cool I think if writers responded by focusing their individual efforts on cultivating a really unique voice that's hard to copy
