Yeah, no. The reason people -- I mean developers -- are pushing to build these is because they are, on a per-square-foot basis, much more profitable for developers to build. And much more profitable, long term, for landlords, since higher turnover means rents can get raised all the time.
Single-room apartments once symbolized everything wrong with New York City. But today, city officials say the solution to the housing crisis involves building a lot more of them. Here's why.
The ‘New’ Solution for the N.Y.C. Housing Crisis: Single-Room Apartments
There is a push to revive single-room occupancy housing, where kitchens and bathrooms are shared among apartments as small as 100 square feet each.

Every economy op-ed writer: No see, you can't buy a house because you buy too many avocado toasts but you're hurting the economy by not buying a new $1,000 phone each year. I am very smart. Also don't ask me about my emails with Epstein.

@ericraglin1992.bsky.social has edited a bunch of my stuff and is really good at giving sharp, specific suggestions that help my story sing.
By the way, it's National Editor Appreciation Day.

Nobody ever reads a great article and thinks, "Dang, that was some tight editing." But editing is a big part of how it got to be great.

So writers, if you've ever worked with a good editor, shout 'em out.

In case you needed more reasons to hate Amazon: I just saw an ad where they encourage people to do online shopping on their phones during a family dinner.

I feel sad.
I replied to a writer's discussion about how fucked up book piracy is (it is) and I think he didn't get that I was being sarcastic, because he blocked me :(

Also, don't fucking pirate books. Piracy is good when it's Spanish doubloons, not humans making art.

England in the Middle Ages was in fact quite brightly colored (interiors, costumes, etc.) and, yes, people bathed.
Is there a word for where films have created such a distorted picture of a time & place that seeing an accurate depiction actually confuses people?
I bet there is in German.
A new werewolf film is currently being recorded and there are some set photos... are we taking bets on this film having the blue filter, it's never sunny and pretty much everything and everyone is constantly being covered in muck?

This from the author who brought us "Ay, Carmela," a dark and satisfying tale of long-overdue retribution against fascists.
Sins of My Sisters is out now.

Dark, folkloric, and feminist horror, available in print + digital through Infested Publishing.

So... it's still true that it's not a good thing to go visit a fascist in the White House and praise him. That hasn't changed.

Man, Netflix is good at making shows that I hate-watch. The Beast in Me is one of those shows that only works if its subjects -- writers, politicians, artists, artistic agents -- act the way they never would in real life.
Okay, so Claire Danes' ex in this show is a struggling painter who lives in a huge loft in Bushwick. And Claire Danes lives in a place that probably cost $1.5-$1.8 million, on a writer's income.

Has anyone at Netflix ever met a... writer? Or an artist?
I'm trying out The Beast in Me (ep. 1), and:

1) Danes' character lives in a huge house in Oyster Bay and her only stated income is... writer? HAHAHAHAHAHA.

2) Yet she's also worried about money somehow?

3) Also, that scene where she meets Jarvis? Girl, he is flying so many red flags.

Actually, if I had my way, any LLM that even attempted to scan my books would dissolve into a puddle of electric wires and goo.
Saw a post today that advised writers to stop writing as if a human will read it and start writing for an LLM that will be summarising.

As someone who really enjoyed trying to develop a peculiar but readable authorial voice, I find this incredibly depressing.
