After five years of reading a lot of new releases/ARCs, esp for revies, blurbs etc, next year I'm going to shake up my reading and focus on books from further back. Need to snap my reading out of the rhythm of the publishing world and deepen my appreciation of significant writers I've overlooked.

I wonder if crime writers of old when typing up their manuscripts used dead keys more than most.

Interesting piece by Kevin Power in the Irish Times. Unlocks something I've been struggling to get my head round. He writes about trying to enjoy work that is clearly meant for someone else. Maybe that's part of what elevates something to art: you don't have to be in a club to fully appreciate it.

These aren’t offhand remarks. They’re a pattern.

They minimise. Mock. Downplay. Delay. Ignore.

The climate crisis is here. The question is: will our leaders wake up before it’s too late.

"would've of"
stancarey.bsky.social
"Would of" (for "would've) and other modal+"of" phrases are surprisingly common in literature – see the link below for loads of examples

But I've seldom if ever seen both at once: "would've of" (from Jim Nesbit's novel Lethal Injection) [1/2]

"Well, I'll be damned," Eddie said. "I never would've of thought you had it in you."
