Ripping this off from many (directly from @tomewing.bsky.social): in 2025, I play to a new-to-me record a day. Partly to prevent year-end listening being so clogged (AGAIN), partly just because I keep finding myself going "I should play more records" and doing nothing about it. Thread to follow.

Their Raintown LP is superb

so we did thanksgiving dinner saturday (deep fried turkey!), ate leftovers all day today, and now we're sitting around a fire before driving home tomorrow. think this might be the new meta

oh no I'm so sorry
ismathers.bsky.social
i don't think this was always the case!

in addition to..... everything else, is it not constitutive of thirst traps that they have _intent_ (to trap, as it were), and so if someone is unaware they are necessarily not doing that? these pricks can't even be internally consistent

To some degree being a good writer counts against someone's compellingness when you are reading them for information rather than pure aesthetic pleasure. Pepole like GK Chesterton and Sam Kriss are freakishly good prose writers, and precisely for that reason you cannot trust their content once you realize they would sound equally convincing regardless of the position they're defending.

Guess people are talking about thinking "the stripper likes you" so good excuse to share this one by @raxkingisdead.bsky.social www.welcometohellworld.com/the-time-it-...
I’m sure plenty of strippers have never fallen in big, irresponsible, week-long love with a customer, but I’m not one of them. Back when I was a stripper, I made great money playing the role of the most glamorous and adoring woman in the world, and I wanted most of my customers to agree that the exchange ended there, just like most of Ani’s do. But damned if there wasn’t a stubborn, needy little damsel crouching low in my spirit who believed that she might find the prince of her dreams in the VIP room. I wasn’t the only stripper cursed with such a traitorous inner damsel—the dressing room was forever abuzz with fairy tales of the girl who’d gotten swept off her feet, and into a mansion, by a besotted customer. She was always a few tantalizing degrees of separation away. She was a little like the mythical El Dorado of clubs that we always gossiped about, where the customers made it rain hundred dollar bills all day every day in some middle-of-nowhere dive whose name nobody could remember. The fairy tale girl probably existed in some form, but the point is that none of us actually knew her, and what we didn’t know we invented lavishly.

oh yeah, to be clear I mean a horrible name for their particular variety of music, not in general
ismathers.bsky.social
it'd be really offensive if they went with "Dale Cooper" or something
ismathers.bsky.social
awful band name, on top of everything else
ismathers.bsky.social
and now another match where i want to vote for all four! what the hell!
ismathers.bsky.social
after two matches in a row where i'm frustrated i can't vote for all four, this one is kind of a letdown.

"Street Dance" is a GB for me, but "Pass the Dutchie" was nearly on my ballot....

TOM WHAT DID YOU DO

there's no way the randomizer alone can account for this group of death

(there is, that's the way randomization works, but still i'm steaming at this)

"Yah Mo B There" (a title that always makes me laugh a little bit) vs "Sucker MCs" is such a brutal apples/oranges choice I almost can't believe they came out the same year. Voting for a song I largely love for Michael McDonald's sweet voice feels, err, counter to the spirit of the poll though.
ismathers.bsky.social
and now i absolutely can't think of the other one!

Frankie/Maze and Kool/Gang are fairly close to tied here, but the latter's video is so charming I think it earns tie breaker status. Might be back for the bonus though....

great song, also did not notice that at all back then lol

October 10: Bing & Ruth - Tomorrow Was the Golden Age (2014)

Very busy morning at work and needed something soothing to put on while I tried to get some things done. This 'worked' (I got the things done) but more importantly it lives up the hype that got me to put it on my list in the first place.

October 9: Liquid Mike - Hell Is an Airport (2025)

Hell yeah more Liquid Mike! Didn't hook me quite as hard on first listen as Paul Bunyan's Slingshot did, but that album is pretty much perfect so even if this is 'merely' excellent I'll take it.

October 8: Unit 4+2 - 1st Album (1965)

Something around my apartment reminded me of "Concrete and Clay" (which, yes, I originally heard via Rushmore) and I thought, why not see if the album is a hidden gem? It isn't. A disgraceful "La Bamba" and more Christian songs than expected.
