Things are bad, but there *is* a future. Don't lose hope. Researching this history has taught me that even small acts of resistance like creating good art and building community and solidarity may feel hopeless, but they are not. History moves on small acts of persistence, all taken together.

The AI automation boom is especially challenging because it targets creative, precarious, and freelance workers, many of whom work alone and lack formal networks of support. We must build, support and nurture them. Reach out to unions or local groups. Form guilds. Unions should be reaching out, too.

I've seen some reactions from struggling artists along the lines of 'I give up' and I feel your pain—but please do not.

Most people don't want to live in a world where artists are automated away, art production is captured by AI firms. Most people hate this idea.
