Even later, as a Cold War kid growing up in a military family, the flag carried a gravity - even a solemnity about it at times. I mean the Union Flag of course, I don't remember seeing the St. George cross anywhere other than in illustrated history books and heraldry at the time.

I potter and bumble along in my little world, occasionally realising with a jolt that I remember a great-grandad who twice survived being gassed in the trenches of the first world war and a grandad who drove an army transport lorry bringing aid to Belsen in 1945.
