Hi! I’m a cartoonist from North Carolina. My current projects are Inoscularum, a fantasy story about healing the world with folk magic, and The Sun & Moon Sisters, a 70s murder mystery about two psychic sisters. www.jbshear.art https://boxd.it/dl0t

When drawing the other eye just isn’t working out
#sketchbook
A picture where instead of drawing the other eye I have cut out a flower from a piece of washi tape and placed it where the other eye should go

THEY DEFORMED ME, COOP. REDUCED ME DOWN TO ONLY MY MOST RECOGNIZABLE CHARACTERISTICS. I’M A CUTESY SHELL OF MY FORMER SELF. THE BOYS AT QUANTICO ARE CALLING ME A “CHEE-BEE.” I’M SEVEN CENTIMETERS TALL, COOP. 150 GRAMS OF VINYL PLASTIC.

A few months overdue, here’s my process for the cover art for The Sun & Moon Sisters, from inspiration to final piece! Details in alt text. This one was a bit of a doozy, so this is post 1/3…

I took my inspiration from Giallo paperback covers (Italian thriller novels named for their bright yellow covers). I liked this one in particular for all of the purples, blues, and greens, and liked the idea of putting Iris in a prominent place on the cover. My initial thumbnail sketches. I also had the idea of doing something more similar to an old Nancy Drew cover, but ultimately settled on the Giallo-inspired cover. The rough pencils for the cover. At first, she was holding a teacup, but I decided to scrap that. You might notice that this looks completely different from the final cover, and that’s because… I decided to completely redraw the cover! I felt like the composition just wasn’t as dynamic as I wanted it to be. But this wasn’t the end of my revisions! To be continued…

Cover process part 2/3!

So, I inked my new cover design, and started coloring it, but Iris’ head was just… really bugging me, it looked really off. I felt like I had to take a chance to salvage what I already had, because I liked the rest of the cover. So…… I traced the shape of her old head into my sketchbook, drew her an all-new head inside that shape, cut it out, and glued it onto the cover! I’m honestly amazed that it worked. I finished inking her head once the glue dried— I didn’t want to glue it down already inked in case it smudged or the ink made the paper curl up. (Here’s the page in my sketchbook where I drew and cut out her new head, where I sketched a bunch of Irises after the fact.)

Cover process part 3/3!

So here it is all inked, and with all of the yellow fully filled in. I used a mix of colored pencils and magic markers to color everything, because I wanted to give it some of the texture that was present in the Giallo cover that inspired me. Gotta be honest, though, I wish I had just done a yellow ink wash here. This was a real pain in the hand! Here it is fully colored in, featuring the blues, greens, and purples that I liked so much about the inspo cover! Here’s the final artwork, scanned and cleaned up! I wound up taking out the “featured in two-sided tales” tagline (using the eye dropper, the brush tool, and my laptop’s trackpad, lol) because I just thought it looked sloppy. I didn’t the same thing for the trim marks too! Ta-daaaaa, here it is all printed out and assembled! I wound up going through Mixam for the printing. I wish the greens had showed up more in the final print, but that might have been an issue on my end with the file I sent them. All in all, I’m pleased with it!

If you get a nosebleed I’m pretty sure the correct response is to put your fingers on your temples and say, “Urgh…. My psychic abilities… are at their limit….!”
