I quietly introduced myself when I arrived on BS in July 2023 – but with the recent influx, it may be called for again. I’m Jeope (pr. JOE-pea): graphic designer for Ducks Unlimited Canada, birder, occasional bird photographer, occasional bird illustrator – and still seeking a northern saw-whet owl.
A photo of me, outside of a cabin in Canadian Shield country, with my arm outstretched and a Canada jay perched on my hand. Close-up macro photo of a Baltimore oriole, looking straight forward, bill up at an angle. The male bird is lit brilliantly by sun. The bill and throat feathers are in sharp focus. Painterly digital illustration of a female snowy owl, on a pale blue background. Front cover of Ducks Unlimited Canada’s Conservator magazine for fall 2024. On the cover is the headline “Where have all the eiders gone?” about tracking common eiders in the Maritimes. The cover photo is of a common eider hen taking off from a yellow-brown field of grass.

Ha! My mom sure knew how to milk that Columbia House offer.

Happy birthday!

Thanks! I’ve probably seen these birds before and not known what I was looking at, or thinking them something else, but I’ve been working on my LBJ ID skills.

Ah, thanks so much!

For sure. And they pop way more in spring/summer but only way up in the Arctic.

BIRTHDAY LIFER!! I turn 50 in a few hours, and gifted myself this first-ever sighting of a lapland longspur. A few winter plumage birds were mixed with a pack of migrating horned larks, all salvaging among the stony shoreline of Lake Winnipeg. #birds #LiferPie
A lapland longspur – a small, brown sparrow-like bird, hunts for food among multi-coloured stones and shells on the shore of an unseen lake. The bird blends in very well!

Yes! Even without binoculars, I could easily see this l’il guy’s fury.

Maybe we can start a movement, of photos of birds how they are usually seen. No more fancypants, high-art closeups!

I went on a big long hike as a gift to myself for my birthday coming up soon, and forgot my binoculars. So, with my crotchety old zoom lens in tow, I was later able to confirm that yeah, those *were* horned larks on the shore, and yup, that *was* a winter wren scolding me from a thicket. #birds
A horned lark in winter plumage, scouring the stones along the shore of an unseen lake for food. A winter wren, center frame but distant, perches on a twig of a messy, overturned evergreen tree. The bird is in shadow but it’s wrennish features are on display: general roundness and a short, erect tail.

Oh yay! I had only my second purple finch sighting in the yard earlier this spring, though I do sometimes see them elsewhere in the neighbourhood. Their map certainly paints Winnipeg as more reliable purple finch country. #birds
A male purple finch snacks on seeds from a hanging metal/mesh feeder.

Don’t forget the left turn at Albuquerque!

I remember the Preds unveiling theirs after being dumped by the Jets in the playoffs, and being roasted for it. Maybe it’s partly optics, seeing how Dallas is the opponent tonight? Even if it still is a big deal.

The clobbering Yankees couldn’t catch ’em – let’s go Blue Jays! #BlueJays #birds
An inquisitive blue jay perches on a soft, rotten stump, investigating a splitting maul jammed into it.

Is each blue dot a 24-hour period? Or some other metric?

They are three times the weight of my car – the fewer of them on the road, the better.

100% deserved. The thing’s owner’s pride in their dumbass purchase needs to be deflated at all costs.

That’s a big pile of robin. A haystack.
