I quietly introduced myself when I arrived on BS in July 2023 – but with the recent influx, it may be called for again. I’m Jeope (pr. JOE-pea): graphic designer for Ducks Unlimited Canada, birder, occasional bird photographer, occasional bird illustrator – and still seeking a northern saw-whet owl.

Been watching some of these regular visitors to the garden a lot recently. Maybe too bling for some, I think these birds are great. Full of personality. Bit cantankerous at times, they always have an opinion about something.

High drama at home this AM while I was out searching for snowy owls. My wife heard a thump on our front window, and texted that a “medium size bird, grey with a bit of orange on its chest” was dead on the deck. I said leave it be, and later ID’d the victim as this female pine grosbeak. #birds

This was the first time I've ever seen a White-breasted Nuthatch in our yard (and there were two!). Always lots of Reds, but never their paler cousins. Very exciting!

This was the first time I've ever seen a White-breasted Nuthatch in our yard (and there were two!). Always lots of Reds, but never their paler cousins. Very exciting!

A bonus from visiting my dad in Ontario at this time of year – despite the unexpected dump of snow – was catching up with migrating dark-eyed juncos that have moved on from my backyard. Junco times are fun-co times! #birds
