I quietly introduced myself when I arrived on BS in July 2023 – but with the recent influx, it may be called for again. I’m Jeope (pr. JOE-pea): graphic designer for Ducks Unlimited Canada, birder, occasional bird photographer, occasional bird illustrator – and still seeking a northern saw-whet owl.
A photo of me, outside of a cabin in Canadian Shield country, with my arm outstretched and a Canada jay perched on my hand. Close-up macro photo of a Baltimore oriole, looking straight forward, bill up at an angle. The male bird is lit brilliantly by sun. The bill and throat feathers are in sharp focus. Painterly digital illustration of a female snowy owl, on a pale blue background. Front cover of Ducks Unlimited Canada’s Conservator magazine for fall 2024. On the cover is the headline “Where have all the eiders gone?” about tracking common eiders in the Maritimes. The cover photo is of a common eider hen taking off from a yellow-brown field of grass.

The clobbering Yankees couldn’t catch ’em – let’s go Blue Jays! #BlueJays #birds
An inquisitive blue jay perches on a soft, rotten stump, investigating a splitting maul jammed into it.

This weekend we stayed at a cabin we’ve rented a number of autumns. It was by far the warmest visit and oddly quiet, bird-wise; normally I get my fill of red-breasted nuthatch beeping but I only saw a single one. And one grouse, and no Canada jays. But there were freak October thunderstorms!

Is each blue dot a 24-hour period? Or some other metric?

They are three times the weight of my car – the fewer of them on the road, the better.

100% deserved. The thing’s owner’s pride in their dumbass purchase needs to be deflated at all costs.

That’s a big pile of robin. A haystack.

There are also a pair of fine pieces of ruddy duck taxidermy on display, and some decorative decoys. One could build a shrine, just saying.

I visited the office for a work function (I work at home), and was happy to find these ruddy duck (aka best duck) items on display: a needle-felt ruddy on a coworker’s desk, and an 80-year-old watercolour by our first staff artist. #birds

I’d never been interested in purchasing a BB gun before until this moment.

昨日リポストした電線で渋滞するスズメたち、40羽ほどいるとしたら、1羽が24gだから960gの重みになってるということですよね…40羽いてもアオサギ1羽分に満たないのね。

They could’ve used blue or yellow splatter at the bottom, but nooo…
