The 8 SMP's are new in MN so we are creating lots of resources. If you want a refresh, check out our stuff. Today we released a free resource anyone can use (K-2 3-5 6-8 HS & educators) to notice the assets of others engaging in the SMPs. Learn more here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NS_...

It's Mental Math Monday! How would you mentally calculate 15×24?
jhartedu.bsky.social
First thought was to break 15 into 10 and 5. But then I noticed both were great candidates for double/halve. 30x12 is easier but I repeat the d/h to get 60x6. Now I'm working with a known square 6x6 is 36 and shift place value since it's 6 tens. 360.

When kids subtract from teen numbers:
🖐 Feel it (manipulatives)
👀 See it (take ones away)
✏️ Symbolize it (write equation)
That hands → eyes → brain path makes subtraction stick! #primaryteachers #primaryschool #firstgrade #firstgradeteachers #secondgrade #subtractionstrategies #homeschooling

Today I helped some teachers come to grips with the fact that their 4th grade math textbook has many lessons that are NOT 4th grade standards.

Not only does the book NOT advocate good teaching...it is also teaching the wrong stuff.

youtu.be/RuoQVGTGifc?... 🎯"Why bridge through 10?" Because 9 + 7 is a drama queen... but 10 + 6 is chill. Teach the strategy, not just the sum. #MathFluency #mathfactfluency #primaryschoolteacher #primaryschool #mathcoach

A math "trick" that can make subtraction easier:

We use this a lot but never considered it with mixed numbers. Always learning. Thank you

Not totally free, but free-ish, Padlet I think has something called Sandbox. Similar to Jamboard. Can have three boards for free I believe.

It might just be the associative property talking, but I think we should pair up...

Weird... but I'm having a harder time than I probably should be reconciling this. I can see it but...

As a math teacher, it feels like half of my job is building mathematical confidence. Here are some ways I do this:

Had fun at our district math PD. What's wrong with me... it's summer. 🤣
jhartedu.bsky.social
Situational... if it cost me $ I'd round down. If it profited me, round to 1. If I was being offered 0.49999 of a brownie, up to 1 full piece. 0.49999 of a brussel sprout, down to 0 thanks. 😁

I like working with 10% as a base. I added 4+5 to make certain 45 was easily divisible by 3. 15 is 10%. So 45 is 30% of 150.
