To summarize,
it seems likely that British people were introduced to the oat-based ANZAC biscuit that Australians were sending in care parcels during the First World War and—for reasons unclear—began calling similar oat bars “flapjacks” around 1928.

In the US, flapjacks continued to mean pancakes.

We are realizing that we have no idea what British people think a “flapjack” is.

My dream of a Mariners-Pilots all-Seattle World Series lives (for at least 20-odd hours).

The future... The polar ice caps have melted, covering the Earth with water. Those who survived have adapted... to a new world…the Waterworld. Also, the Tigers and Mariners are still playing Game 5 of the ALDS somehow.

Ok that game lasted 7 hours and 20 minutes. (WS game 3 2018).

This game is only 4 hours and 42 minutes old.

The power of the pitch clock!

As someone who sat through a seven hour, 18 inning playoff game, let me tell u that everyone in that stadium is both freezing and starving lol

You’ve gotta be kidding me. 14th inning here we come…

This is the second winner-take-all game in postseason history to go at least 13 innings, joining:

2018 NLWCG Rockies over Cubs, 13 innings

I REALLY can’t believe that the Tigers got out of that jam (bottom 12).

Good time to mention how much I like the pitch clock. If a game is going to go at least 12 innings, let’s start the bottom of the 12th in under four hours.
jmadelman.bsky.social
Can’t believe the Mariners got themselves out of that jam.

Easier when you’re neutral, of course, but fun!

Can confirm that James Madison did not have “inflatable frog costume” on his free speech bingo card.

One reason why the Constitution broadly protects speech without regard to its content, and why it also protects expressive conduct rather than words alone, is that you never know whether the most profound form of protest against authoritarianism will turn out to be a frog costume.

Side note: lest you think this is a one-off, a sizable group of Catholic nuns, priests and lay leaders have announced plans to do the same thing — offer communion to detainees in the Broadview ICE facility — tomorrow.

NEW: Clergy are at the Broadview, IL ICE facility today — where clergy have been shot w/pepper balls in recent days.

UMC minister Rev. Hannah Kardon, one of those shot w/pepper balls in the past, among those asking to give communion to those detained. Attendees (who sent photos) say police declined

The Speaker of the House is telling the Fox News audience that a peaceful demonstration by Americans on the National Mall will actually be a gathering of organizations the administration has designated as violent terrorists.

Seems bad?

Mike Johnson: "We're so angry about it. I mean, I'm a very patient guy, but I've had it with these people. The theory we have right now -- they have a hate America rally that's scheduled for October 18 on the National Mall. It's the pro-Hamas wing and antifa people ... "

So reminiscent of Buckner, too. Sure that was the last play, but a lot of his teammates put him in that position.

That was the first postseason series in history to end on a walkoff error.

What a crushing way for any team to end a season.

Bill Buckner might come to mind, but that was only Game 6.

One of my favorite thing in baseball is when the broadcast talks about how the manager should be feeling some sort of big feeling and then they cut to a totally stoic man spitting seeds or blowing gum bubbles

Book authors: You can't and shouldn't try to present the whole book in one talk. You'll lose people. I've gotten better at narrowing it to a *slice* of the book. Writing a talk for another college in which I slice into the book argument from a different angle.
