How To Touch Grass
A comics anthology about "touching grass", because it's a lot harder than it looks.

No one has any fucking clue what the tariffs are from moment to moment. A functioning democracy would’ve necessarily incarcerated Trump and his children and his financial backers years ago.

In conclusion, while an e-collar COULD be used for cruelty, it is not a tool FOR cruelty, nor is it solely capable of causing pain. Like a leash or a regular collar or a crate, it’s on YOU to use it ethically and responsibly.
joamettegil.bsky.social
The “shock” (as in, how one reacts to the unexpected) creates a window for you to regain said dog’s attention and give a verbal command like “hey buddy don’t make me get hit by a car goo’boyy.”

The equivalent of tapping someone who doesn’t see you on the shoulder.
joamettegil.bsky.social
You could call this a second purpose, but I consider it “distance” feedback of a sort: snapping them out of it.

Got a dog that no longer perceives your voice once they’ve started lunging into the busy road after a squirrel?
joamettegil.bsky.social
E-collars (because I honestly hate the sensationalism of “shock” collar) serve a narrow, specialized purpose in dog training: distance feedback. You first teach the dog to associate the lowest possible sensation with a specific behavior, most often coming back to you. (Lowest possible = they notice)
joamettegil.bsky.social
Certain breeds wouldn’t even be able to feel THAT if their coat is dense enough, in which case the shock collar is a useless tool anyway.
joamettegil.bsky.social
When used as intended, the higher settings never come into play at all UNLESS the dog is literally so massive and resilient that anything lower is imperceptible to them.
joamettegil.bsky.social
I specified “on a human being” when I described the intensity scale because dogs span a wider range of size, coat thickness, and resilience than humans do.

The same setting used for a chihuahua and for Tibetan mastiff will cause radically different sensations.
joamettegil.bsky.social
If you’ve ever been hooked up to a TENS unit for physical therapy for your carpal tunnel, you’ve experienced a shock collar.
joamettegil.bsky.social
Don’t get me wrong, no one should use one unless they’ve been trained themselves on HOW it’s meant to be used. Depending on how high the settings go, we’re talking a sensation from “subtle tickle” up to “muscle spasm” on a human being.

TIL most people think shock collars electrocute dogs.

Lottie is a very serious person and not to be messed with, she has armies of chickens and cats to do her bidding.

There was a meeting at our city hall about trans safety and these are the notes I wrote for an impromptu speech I gave, one of about 20 that evening. I'm definitely gonna be attending more meetings and giving more speeches in the future.
Text that reads:

I am set to perform at the Avenue Cafe on Saturday, to use my freedom of speech, but I've never had more stage fright in my entire life. In 15 years doing drag, burlesque, and performance art, I've never been this scared.

The first amendment is not equally applied to everyone. Some people have more freedom to speak than others and some of those people have used their free speech to threaten the trans community.

We have laws against hate speech, but laws that aren't enforced fail to be laws.

Why we have hate speech laws is because hate speech is terrorism. An act of terrorism has been committed in Lansing. One man's words have terrified the queer and trans people of this entire city. The terrorism doesn't start with the gun, it starts with the words.

A balloon popped at the Ave and people thought we were about to be the next Pulse massacre. And it got me wondering, if that gunman had given warning that he was coming, would anyone have taken steps to prevent it? Would anyone be proactive about it, or would they also be met with a shrug?

Ally is useless as a noun. It's a verb. It requires action. Reaction is almost always too late.

What the fuck kind of attempt to lead by the hand even is this

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

But let's not get it twisted: rage and conflict ARE unity.

Unity isn't docile, it isn't quiet, it isn't passive.

Unity is when violence against one of us makes ALL of us scream.

It's when a mother bear charges as you approach her cubs.
joamettegil.bsky.social
If you ever get worried about how little "unity" you're perceiving, consider going outside.

You'll find that our disunity as Americans is overblown by the Internet.

The absolute worst actors in all of this are isolated; paid trolls; Russian bots; politicians; or too wealthy to be your neighbor.
joamettegil.bsky.social
The thing about the "unity" being called for is that it matters WHO is calling for it. Liberal politicians and pundits are calling for "unity" as in "unite in support of whatever the Democratic agenda is." Fascists and conservatives calling for "unity" are trying to gaslight you into submission.
joamettegil.bsky.social
"But Jo what about unity on the Left???" I'll tell you right now that if you include the Liberals in that, you're talking about unity between "the Left" and "fascist collaborators."
