"Monday's child is fairly tough
Tuesday's child is tender enough
Wednesday's child is good to fry
Thursday's child is best in pie.
Friday's child makes good meat roll
Saturday's child is casserole
But the child that is born on the
Sabbath day, is delicious when eaten in any way."
The front cover illustration of Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf by Catherine Storr from 1973. A young girl stands on a wooden chair in a kitchen with a black and white chequered floor pattern, she holds the lid up from a blue pan from which emanates a delicious smell. A wolf stands paws clasped in front of him, eyes closed, enjoying the smell.

@katebevan.com I like that the text appears to be the same shade of grey as the object it's stuck on. Also the cup and the sticker text look like they match too.

First ever visit to Cadogan Hall for Shaun Usher's Diaries of Note live event. All fantastic. Left at speed afterwards though to get the last ferry home from Cadogan Pier to North Greenwich. Last used that pier in 2018 (Twitter is my diary!). Am Cadoganing today.

I've submitted a Qn asking them to consider creating some Small Grant (~£20k) funding for Science Communication & Public Engagement activities, which don't have to be tethered to a particular research grant.

Context, and examples of standalone #scicomm funding peeecs.wordpress.com/2025/10/13/e...
In addition to the larger PE Champion grants would the EPSRC consider creating a funding scheme for smaller science communication / public engagement grants (~£20k) which do not have to be tethered to a particular research grant? This would also allow new engagement ideas (or new ways of engagement) that are not already costed in a project to be considered for funding. There are several examples of similar funding, and more context, in an email I sent to the psci-com mailing list earlier this year https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/wa-jisc.exe?A2=PSCI-COM;b4206cc7.2503, thank you.

There are loads of things I use everyday now that I remember discovering ~15 years ago and told everyone else about *at the time* (e.g. Dropbox) but I don't necessarily *continue* to tell people about long-since discovered things, perhaps I (we?) should.
Not #TIL but #15YAIL ;)

Handy new DIARY thing from WorkFlowy
(incredibly useful organisational tool, make lists, move items around, nest them, complete them).
workflowy.com - free version (I do pay for my version though).

• Click the little diary above to change the date
• Click the diary icon between the person and star above right to open this page
• https://workflowy.com - I do pay for this service now so possibly this is a paid-for perk but I happily used the free one for years before I thought I really ought to pony up some moolah for it :) Love WorkFlowy. Easy-to-reorder (click and drag, nest) lists. Marvellous.

Free mini foldable Hallowe'en zine to colour in and complete puzzles. Can also be used in computer science classes, or just for fun. UK (A4) and US (letter) versions available for different printers. Keen to know if it works in US!
cs4fn.blog/halloweenzine/
A screenshot of the entire 8 page mini zine laid out flat. Seven of the 8 pages contain a puzzle and or something to colour in. The last page shows how to put it together once completed, and there's a link and a QR code on how to find out more information and get more zines to print.

Fixed the roosting bat, no longer severed (on my printer at least).
jobrodie.bsky.social
Making a Hallowe'en zine for CS4FN, free to download. Needs a bit of tweaking as the little bat fell off the bottom when printed. Or rather was severed in the middle (not unreasonable for Hallowe'en I suppose).
Icons from various Pixabay creators, will all be linked here cs4fn.blog/halloweenzine/
A screenshot of page 1 of the mini zine. How it prints out. The front page says Happy Hallowe'en from CS4FN in bold text with space to colour in the letters. Also to colour in are a broom, cauldron with vapours rising, potion bottles and a witches hat. At the bottom of the CS4FN text hangs half a bat as he was severed in the printing process as I got the margins a bit wrong.

Also I will be delighted to hear of any typos I've dimwittedly introduced as a consequence of tweaking something else :)

By typos I mean spooky deliberate mistakes you understand.

OoooooOOOOOooowooooh etc etc.
jobrodie.bsky.social
There are A4 versions which I've tested but also a US letter version (hi American pals!) which I can't test because I don't have a printer or US letter paper. Happy to hear if it works on your printers.
Have also included the files as PNGs just in case :)
And printing and folding instructions.

If you have / teach children you might enjoy our free Hallowe'en Spooky Zine, from @cs4fn.bsky.social at @qmuleecs.bsky.social.

There are puzzles to solve and pictures to colour in, then fold into a cute booklet.
Bonus info: classroom links with computational thinking.

Hallowe’en Zine
An activity for children, for Hallowe’en. Mostly just for fun (colouring in and puzzle solving) but as always we have sneaked in a bit of computational thinking ideas too.

Heh :)
AI companies are welcome to hoover up my data* (if they ask first, not if they don't) but I never want their AIs interrupting me or getting in the way.

*It's such good data. I must share my pithy, correctly formatted (and spelled) sentences with the world ;-)

@louisrossmann.bsky.social started a campaign using #Clippy as an example of limited-AI against the overreach of companies exploiting us and our data.
Why Clippy?
Symbolic of Help, Not Profit: Clippy, a Microsoft Office assistant, is remembered as a tool that was (sometimes awkwardly) designed to help users with tasks.
Contrast with Modern Tech: The movement uses Clippy to contrast with large tech companies' practices, which are seen as prioritizing profits and data mining over user well-being and true ownership.
Protest Against Corporate Overreach: Using the Clippy avatar serves as a visible, collective way for people to show their opposition to practices like forced subscriptions, firmware locks that prevent repairs, and privacy violations

If you have uBlockOrigin or something like that you can hide the little AI pencil icon (well, at least for now) by putting this in your dashboard. Copy and paste
