At 10pm tonight on BBC4...probably the best long interview (almost three hours, in two parts) about cinema, and other matters, I've ever seen, from 1982. The inimitable Orson Welles. I remember watching and loving this when it was first shown in the Arena arts strand.

First of a two-part film profile of Orson Welles, which goes as far as Touch of Evil.

"I will read anything Chaz Brenchley writes. His prose is melted butter with tarragon, and his characters and worldbuilding equally delicious. Open this book to any page, and you will find something to delight you." - Ellen Kushner on Of the Emperor's Kindness

Cover of Of The Emperor’s Kindness by Chaz Brenchley. Art by Ben Baldwin.

Image is of a young woman in a long pale dress stood outside the gates of a large, wooden mansion. The word ‘Verantha’ is written on the gates. White birds fly above her.

A general thought for new novelists: it's always worth checking an individual agent's submission guidelines on their website before submitting.

When I go on holiday in a couple of weeks I'll be starting my regular re-read of THE LORD OF THE RINGS. In my late teens and early 20s I read it twice a year. Then once a year. Now I re-read it every two or three years, and I remain emotionally engaged every single time...

Hall of Bones by Tim Hardie

Discounted Audiobooks now available directly from Audiobook Empire

“To top it all off, RJ Bayley narrates the audiobook. I don’t really know what else to say there. It’s perfect. Bayley is just one of the best narrators. That’s all there is to it.” - Hall of Bones

“in audio form each story is only around 15 minutes, and in that short time, Hardie crafts tales of a fascinating world populated by in depth, well-rounded characters. It just draws you in and spits you back out wanting more.” - A Roll of the Dice

“R J Bayley ... brings exactly the right level of gruff while still delivering a great range of nuance for the broad cast of characters.” - Hall of Bones
