I follow a twisting, turning route through the streets, trying to follow the thread of her. It’s made more difficult by people walking this way and that, bumping into each other, stopping to stare into shop windows or to wait at crossings for the green man. I switch my pace to match tourists or locals, different memories emerging with different movements. For some this town is the daily grind, swift footsteps carrying them through regular routines. For others, its a place of escape and diversion, of pausing to read a menu or point at a brightly painted boat, then hurrying on to the amusement arcades. Lives lived in a single space but parallel worlds. Through that space run the cars, severing one side of the street from the other, breaking the rhythm of humanity. So close together, we should all be connected, but instead the town is fractured, opaque, like a windscreen in the aftermath of a crash. Star has hidden herself in this.

I looked up at the looming grey vessels, casting shadows over the high-rise buildings. There was nowhere to run. We had a day. Just one day. But that was enough for my mission. I had to kill my mother. I kept moving eastward. Abandoned vehicles littered the streets. It looked like an ordinary Ahmedabad traffic jam, except there were no horns beeping, no one shouting. Already the streets were largely devoid of the living. It was only by their absence that I noticed them: no fresh animal excrement, no sweaty humans jostling for space, no exhaust fumes, no street vendors selling roasted peanuts, or chai-wallahs serving endless cups of cutting-tea. But there were still looters, fanatics who refused to give up their homes, and several others with their own reasons. Like me.

To say Dan and Fin are in right pickle doesn't begin to cover the challenges they're facing. Has Dan had an idea how to get them out of this sticky situation?

Book extract reads: I looked up and stared at nothing. An idea was floating just out of reach. A moment later, it hit me like a smack in the face. I ran up the stairs, taking them two and three at a time. In the front bedroom, I emptied Fin’s suitcase onto the bed. I turned over her clothes, raking them apart with my hands. Nothing. I realised anyone outside would be able to see what I was doing. They’d also see I’d lost the towels I’d been wearing on the stairs. I quickly drew the curtains. Fin had hung the dress bag for her bridesmaid’s frock on the front of the wardrobe. I pulled the zip down so hard it jammed. I forced myself to go more slowly. Taking the frock out of the bag, I shook it. The shoes and the headdress of silk flowers fell onto the floor. I didn’t care about them. I carefully turned the dress inside out. I saw a fleck of white caught in a seam. A tiny, downy feather.

Book extract reads: ‘Do you know if the pub does food?’ She pointed across the village green. ‘The George and Dragon?’ One of the other two replied, ‘I don’t think the dining room will be open, not this evening. The police are using it.’ ‘Really?’ Fin managed to sound suitably startled. ‘Why?’ The first girl looked disappointed. ‘You haven’t heard?’ ‘We’re on holiday,’ Fin apologised. ‘We only arrived this afternoon.’ ‘Someone snatched a baby from a house at the other end of the village.’ The second girl jerked her head, indicating the main road behind us. ‘It’s all right though,’ the third girl said quickly. ‘They’ve found her. She’s back home with her mum and dad.’ The local social networks were impressively quick if they already had that news. How soon would word spread that Fin and I were somehow involved? Other people in Pigeon Lane must have seen the police cars arrive, and the coppers talking to us. They’d have seen the screaming baby being carried out of the cottage. How long before someone shared what we looked like or posted a photo? We’d be instantly recognisable in a place this small.

They never got out of the city.’ Gently, Sarah held out her hands and lifted the helmet out of the girl’s grip. ‘I can’t take you out there with us.’ She watched the girl’s determination fade to despair. ‘I need you here. Running my communications.’
