I glance up at the overhanging cliff before following the gawpers and their strange cats into the cavern. The overhanging rockface there looks cracked and dangerously loose. Pausing inside, Deadlock makes a fist in the air. As he brings it down, there comes a rumble and a scatter of gravel falls from the cliff outside. It is as though he is pulling at the very ground above us with an invisible force. Larger rocks follow his draw and a moment later, a huge mass of stone and earth cascades into the entrance behind us. Blocking the way, it fills the air with dust and dark as we hurry deeper in. Beneath the din of the rockfall, wolves bay and yelp, and before long all becomes quiet and still. ‘What now?’ I ask. In the soft glow of the gawpers’ eyes, we wait. Listen. And then the howling begins again—a mournful, haunting, hunting sound—the wolf survivors banding together in fury.

The kid clinging to the knocker isn’t selling religion. Girl scout cookies, maybe—she looks like a younger-every-year freshman at best, the kind taking a deep breath before begging for a much-needed extension, the kind that wait until semester’s end before admitting to poorly-treated depression, or sick kids, or whatever they’ve always been told is a terrible excuse for skin-of-the-teeth work. This one—white, lapis-haired, decked in jeans and an ill-fitting leather jacket—stares wide-eyed and takes that breath, then blurts out: “I’m Chloe Davis and I beg the protection of the house!” This is not an entirely unfamiliar situation. It’s weirder here than in an office with a big rainbow Safe Space sign on the door, but we’ve been taking in strays since the injured flying squirrel we rehabbed in my sophomore dorm room. even during plague years, when guests were forbidden, we all volunteered for hotlines or comforted students remotely or hosted one who couldn’t safely go home.

The following morning, the youngsters got up and dressed quickly and quietly and went downstairs. All was as usual in the breakfast room, but Uncle Wulf was nowhere to be seen. Breakfast for Rag and Boyd was a matter of buttering toast and eating bacon and poached eggs quietly and trying hard not to guess what might happen to them. ‘What do you think he’ll do?’ Rag said when she couldn’t bear the silence any longer. Boyd shrugged; his mouth was full of toast. Rag, rarely at a loss for words, didn’t know what else to say. They carried on eating and waited. Uncle Wulf arrived just as they were finishing, he came into the room, the pukis riding on his shoulder; it now had a little leather collar on. Wulf was carrying a wide basket, which he put on the floor in the corner. He pointed to it and the pukis meekly flew down and curled up inside. Uncle Wulf sat down at the table in silence. The three of them looked at each other. Eventually Wulf spoke first. ‘You will have questions.’
