Tropical Storm Priscilla formed in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Mexico on Saturday. The Miami-based National Hurricane Center said Priscilla was a “large tropical storm,” with tropical storm-force winds extending as far as 140 miles (220 kilometers) from its center.

That is part of it. Started in earnest in the 80’s when the fairness doctrine was abolished. That opened the door to conservative firebrands to be on the air. People were entertained and started to buy into the story because it was the only show in town. An echo chamber can get quite loud.
