'...The participation of people with good intentions doesn't change a system that exists to cause harm. In fact, the participation of good people ensures its success...'

(Patty Krawec [@daanis.ca], 'Becoming Kin: An Indigenous Call to Unforgetting the Past and Reimagining Our Future', 82).
I have a feeling that Paul Tillich would haven't any trouble navigating this.

Years back, someone told me the late Geo. Grant'd simply enter McMaster U.'s pool and tread water for twenty minutes or so and then get out of the pool; that action, treading vs 'lengths' or 'widths', seems telling to me.

I wanna posit this really big and awkward question: What does "Canadian digital sovereignty" mean for Indigenous Peoples here when Canada is not only giving up its pretences for "Reconciliation", but also increasingly hostile to Indigenous Peoples who oppose Canada as a resource extraction colony?

There was a poll on CBC about this and apparently more "Canadians" are now in favour of a strong economy over environmental protections. We are apparently happier burning this place to the ground for money than anything else.

I'm reminded of @wordsandguitar.bsky.social's novel, 'And Then She Fell'.

“For all his talk of reconciliation, Prime Minister Mark Carney’s push to accelerate the next wave of nation building has exposed a familiar fault line: when economic ambition collides with Indigenous consent, ambition usually wins,” writes Wendy Kaur. thewalrus.ca/a-subjugation-fi...
I did not know of this. Sweet mother of god.... Thanks for sharing it about.
That's, of course, only in place until said places unionize as they should.
It'd be good if we could also stop buying booze from non-union shops (like gas stations and convenience stores), too, though.

“Reduced hours is the only measure of economic reform which consults the interests of the laborers as consumers. Now, this means a higher standard of living for the producers, which can only be acquired by possessing and consuming a larger share of their own product”
— Albert Parsons (1886)
Amen and amen.

If your version of “standing up for Jesus” requires dehumanizing and erasing trans* and gender non-conforming people, you’re not following Christ. You're denying the Gospel. #transrights #transrightsarehumanrights
ExACTly. They do just enough to say they 'did' something, and then blame Indigenous peoples. I was there for the March against Nestle, years back now, actually was honoured to bear a wampum belt (for settlers to carry), and not a thing on water has shifted for Indigenous peoples' betterment since.
Good on you for covering it and good on @matthewgreen.bsky.social for keeping it up.
Pace @laura-babcock.bsky.social, I'm thankful people are standing up against this 'dignified prime minister'. We aren't 'true north, strong, and free'; this place is a legal fiction and its gov't is committing genocide against sovereign Indigenous peoples. Be grateful for dissent, this Thanksgiving.

I've yet to see a single discussion of "Canadian digital sovereignty" include any Indigenous experts, at best we're given a token mention that at some point they'll "consult with Indigenous Peoples" like we're some sort of monolith. Umm, y'all need to consider all our lands, and our distinctiveness.
On Six Nations, they got $10.7m for high-speed Internet and $0 for potable water. I'm not against Internet access but let's prioritize what people need, first.

The eldest Oyster looked at him,
But never a word he said:
The eldest Oyster winked his eye,
And shook his heavy head —
Meaning to say he did not choose
To leave the oyster-bed.
Thank you for sharing this. I've put whatever of his the library has on hold for reading sometime down the trail.

New — Video shared with me shows ICE officers in DC detaining a man on Friday.

Bystander filming asks man for his name. ICE agent lies and says he’s not allowed to speak to him “by law” and another says “We’ve arrested American citizens for being too close…If he gets any closer, put him in cuffs.”
Getting upset about the lack of fur in the late Supreme Ct Justices' vestments is peak "Canada". THIS is what we're about....
'...Canada is a nation of laws, and the Constitution is the highest law in the land.... It doesn't matter what you think of Indigenous peoples and their rights. Section 35 rights are separate from Charter rights. They cannot be overruled by the notwithstanding clause...'.
(cf. "Public board launches fund for schools to grow existing nutrition programs - Idea was sparked by a $15,000 private donation received at the end of June", from today's paper of record):

My rationale was that we were adults and could get by on tea and water for a two-hour meeting, once a month.
At Apr 2025's Teachers' Council, I moved a motion that our catered food's costs and any unspent monies in our budget would be foregone for the last two months of the school year and the amount donated to school nutrition programmes for students. It was roundly voted down. I resigned in protest
