Again, not to support the Maduro regime but neither would I cheer a US regime change or forget that Maria Corina Machado is a member of the far Right and a threat to people in Venezuela. Some screen shots of far right twitter accounts supporting her. She was smart to thank Trump immediately.

So she's like a Javier Milei, gung ho free market, privatize everything and destroy the government, MAGA type that we're seeing emerge in the global far and fascist Right. Again, this is not a defense of the Maduro regime as much as a heads up reminder as to who Machado is. 2/2

I haven't followed Venezuelan politics closely but it's my understanding that Maduro sucks because he's an autorcrat that limits both left and right opposition to unacceptable levels. But it's also true that current Nobel Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado is part of the far Right. 1/2

"Somnium" is an extremely well acted science fiction film about a sinister sleep clinic and an aspiring actress who just moved to L.A. Chloë Levine is great. I'd seen her before in "The Sacrifice Game" and her IMDB goes back to 2002 so she's been at this since she was a kid. Highly recommended.

From today's On Point on NPR (not a fan of the host). Two officers. One of them, Colonel Douglas Macgregor, sounds like a paranoid Nixon era type, almost like a Dr. Strangelove character. He's probably a good barometer for some of the military brass on whether they'll back a Trump coup or not.

Rutgers TPUSA used lies and hate speech to label professor Mark Bray "Professor Antifa," claiming he is a terrorist, and calling for his firing. He received death threats that led to his family leaving the country to continue teaching remotely. His wife is also a professor at Rutgers.

Useful reference. While I think their estimate of 5 trans mass shooters may be 1 or 2 high, the fact that the precent is 0.1% is clear. This is not "one percent." It's zero point one percent. So the number is lower than one in a thousand. The numbers aren't everything but they matter.

Just watched "Restless" (2024) with Lyndsey Marshal as a woman whose parents moved out of their place next door only to be replaced by party animal assholes who blast the absolute worst rave/techno/ kick drum and scream garbage all night every night. Chaos ensues. Grueling good comedy.

A very tired and disheveled looking woman in her 40s looks in disbelief at her younger asshole neighbor who seems to be yelling at her to calm down. They are in front of their connected apartments on the lawn.

I don't think it's bad to warn that the militarization of law enforcement is dangerous and that it's something to worry about. In this case though, bringing up Fallujah was implied to be a case where brutal military force was justified "Oh, it was just against brown people in another country." 3/3

Fallujah (2004) is comparable to the My Lai massacre. Dahr Jamal witnessed it as one of the few non-embedded reporters in Iraq. One war crime was using white phosphorus, which melts people. Military aged males were not allowed to leave the city and entire families were forced to stay and die. 2/
