There are some shocking things on our local forums. Surely they have to be challenged by promoting the facts. I don't envy your struggle in working it how to do it in a manner that doesn't call them idiots (even though they often are) as that seems to make them worse. I appreciate you wanting to try

I'm sure there will be a roof raising 'Yorkshire Yorkshire..' chant. Genuinely sorry to be missing it!

Ours brought sugary tea for when we ate our packups. Sat leaning against a crate in the fog eating dinner (wasn't called lunch in those days 😂)Learning early about working and earning

Genuinely happy memories of spud picking at the local farm with all the other kids in the autumn half term and weekends. Paid per crate collected and loved my spud wage! Hard work though!

“Farm workers follow where the spinner has passed and collect the potatoes in shallow baskets.
Picking up potatoes is back-aching work”
Writer: EL Grant Watson

On a misty day in autumn, a group of mainly women follow a tractor to gather potatoes. The figures are hunched over and you can almost feel the back pain.

Used to go spud picking as a child on the local farm. You got paid per crate and all the local youngsters did it at the weekends and autumn half term. Willingly. Loved my spud wage!

Planet earth is very sick and it’s our fault.

We are destroying the natural world and burning it, this is causing the temperatures to rise and the climate to begin shifting into something today’s life on earth is not evolved for or adapt to quickly enough.

Today Leeds followed our forebears who kicked Oswald Moseley and his Facists out of the city at the Battle of Holbeck Moor and stood up to racism, the far right and said loud and clear”Refugees are welcome here”. This is Leeds

Iconic is a word that is definitely overused but in the case of the Piece Hall in Halifax that is not the case. Built in 1775-9, it is a rare surviving example of a large-scale, purpose-built cloth hall. Historic England has praised its architectural and historical interest

Dad’s books are full of empathy, common sense, and a healthy suspicion of the powerful. But at its heart his work is also about how systems keep people poor while pretending it’s their own fault. So I hope Kemi’s taking notes as well as reading the jokes.

“A full harvest moon is rising, though it is still only twilight”

A barn owl is perched on a wall at dusk. A full moon has risen in the still blue sky above a small village.

Just beautiful

Six weeks ago, I picked up a year-old tawny owl with a broken leg off the main road near our home and dropped him off at our nearest vet.

After a few days, I received one of the most bizarre phone calls I’ve ever had, asking “So when are you coming to pick up your owl?” 🧵

Today is the 89th anniversary of The Battle of Cable Street when the people of the East End of London halted the march of Oswald Mosley’s Blackshirts through Stepney.

For many years I have been posting little observations online. What you may not know is that for many years, artists have been illustrating them - for no reason other than they wanted to respond. Below is a thread of some of these beautiful drawings because they should be seen 🧵
