Dublin 15, Ireland. Nobody wants to read what I write once they’ve read what I’ve written. I assuredly will write it. I also post occasionally about coding, bird-feeding, photos of things, cycling, and drawing (once in a while). He/him

I never did this here:
I guess that I should introduce myself, tell everyone a bit about me. I live in Dublin 15 in Ireland out on the Western edge of Europe, in more privilege than I like to admit. [1/10]
Photo, landscape, exterior: A selfie, bald, bearded man wearing a green hoodie, parkland behind obscured by bokeh. He appears to be very happy, perhaps manically so, maybe his is thinking about all of the happy things.

Arrgh! My partner told me that he’s apparently gone a bit edgelord, off in the deep end. I hope not, but…

I agree.

Governments across Europe are seizing their "fire at the Reichstag" moments.

The UK government plans to introduce legislation to ban peaceful protests when the government dislikes the topic of protest.

If you're a European and you're not deeply concerned, then you aren't paying attention.
Police to get broader powers to crack down on repeated protests
The move is not a ban on protests but

This is good because if they reopen the railway to Navan, he'll lie down in front of it (his stated aim), and then you wouldn't get that chance again

Like, people who own castles or what have you, but claim not to have money for stuff, and at some point you learn that they're the 14th Arch Garibaldi of Ballymutton. They walk among us but up close it's like a parallel reality.

I've been adjacent to a particular group in Irish society that moves in these circles. Not friends of mine, but interacting enough to know that it's an odd world, the old money set. There are also people who want to buy in, and it's all very weird.

Under the terms of the ceasefire agreement, the freed Palestinians include 250 people serving life sentences for convictions following attacks on Israelis, in addition to 1,700 hostages seized from Gaza and held without charge since October 2023.

There is even an absent candidate who will still get a non-trivial percentage of the vote. This is a terrible election, with no good choices.

My point was that this is a very low bar. I’m not even getting into the disability green paper or what have we. I’m no fan of Connolly, but Fine Gael have been in power for how long? I can no longer buy a damn home, and the homelessness figures are at historical high.

I will vote no. 1 for Connolly, with strong reservations, because absolutely Humphreys and her party do not deserve to get into Áras an Uachtaráin. She couldn't even be arsed to learn Irish when that was her actual job. This is a very low bar for a Presidential election, but here we are.

I made a wisecrack recently about even Alan Kelly being right twice a day or something similar, but it appears that he is not even that.

And because we have rules to protect us economically, they are incentivised to go ahead and risk flying those things even if that guy isn’t around, possibly especially if he isn’t around because he might say ‘Yeah, no, there’s no way that thing is safe until I’m done with it’

I’ve experienced a variation of this with Loganair, minus the bus, but with added ‘Wait, do their planes actually work? Do they even service these things?’

O’Brien: There must be rehabilitation and restorative justice
Us: What? Well, yes we agree, absolutely, wow

O’Brien: Great. So I have these religious orders here and a bunch of priests, who everyone said should-
Us: Oh no

My column today in a paper but also behind a paywall: If Maria Steen is a failed candidate, why do people want journalists to stop writing about her?

I am on a bus (This was originally a Greg Stekelman line)

Work trip to Brussels this past week. 1/2
Photo, landscape, interior: Looking down a long office corridor, white walls, subdued lighting. Photo, landscape, exterior: Selfie of a genial, bald, somewhat unshaven potato-headed man in a blue-grey shirt with a blue lanyard on a city street. There are large office buildings in the distance behind. Photo, landscape, exterior: Two diverging city streets divided by a wedge-shaped building in the older Dutch/French style. Photo, landscape, exterior: Looking down a main street, a road emerging from underground with heavy traffic between tall office buildings in various architectural styles. Early evening.
