A digital illustration of a spotted ocelot cat reclined in a green, grassy place. The cat has rich, orange fur dappled with large dark spots and stripes. There are multicolored, Icelandic poppies sprouting from its shoulders and body. A digital illustration of a group of green, mossy kittens. They are various shades and hues of green, brown and orange. They all look happy and relaxed. There are a few, large fallen leaves on the mossy ground surrounding the group of cats. A digital illustration of a turtle swimming under water. There are waterlily plants growing out of its shell and head with a large, pink flower on the surface of the wafer above. A digital illustration of a green parrot sitting on a branch. The bird has a red tail and a white ring around its eye. Its head is turned slightly to the right in a coy expression. There are delicate mango flowers sprouting from the bird’s tail and head.

A sketch page of a cat creature that has a long, leaf-like tail flowing behind it. The sketch appears to be exploring the movement of such a creature.

I am quite frankly desperate to make ends meet this month. We are $900 short on rent alone despite everything, and could really use any help we can get. I'm taking autumn YCH commissions and accepting any other help I can get to make sure the check clear in just a few days here.

No, I am not currently down at this protest, but I’ve been watching streams regularly. It has not escaped me that my protest animals seem to be in line with how my city has decided to respond to current events. I love my city.

War ravaged Portland.
Good on you Frog Squad.
A screenshot of a livestream K2 is providing of the ongoing protests against ICE in downtown Portland Oregon. The picture shows several people in blow up animal costumes amongst the crowd of people protesting. In the background there are ICE personnel on the roof of the building.

I thought it might help to make a tutorial of how I setup my Bsky. Minus the image moderation, here are a few other ways to customize your BlueSky. (1/2) #art #bskyart
Tips for Bluesky. +bridge +populate +setup feeds +communicate +moderate. Chibi version of myself in the corner. Where to start: If you just setup a new account, it's going to feel a bit quiet. Here's some pointers to make it feel like home. "Be a Person." +Add a profile pic, add a banner, introduce yourself. (This helps others know you aren't a bot/scammer.) Do not use generative images for pfp/banner. This community is heavily artists and labels will tag your account and show you don't support artist rights. (in general... don't use unethical stolen data. Ironically or not.) Populate. Time to follow and fill your sky with people you enjoy! Starter Packs: Great way to find people with similar interest. You don't need to follow everyone on the list if you want to vet individually. Skybridge: If you still have the bird app you can make it work for you. Use this chrome/firefox extension to keep your network. Image example of skybridge from web store. Color indicators will show if they are available. Chibi self being excited in corner!

I guess this is just a long winded way of saying I feel forever gaslit by society’s view on artists and creatives and it is nice that the Irish government decided to attempt to invest in its people rather than just telling us we need to work harder in a system designed to break them.
keymonster.bsky.social
Sometimes even throwing in that they could do it themselves or use ai or fiver or any of the other things actively devaluing my craft.
keymonster.bsky.social
I have lost track of the number of people who have asked, “Hey, you’re an artist, could you make _ for me?”
Inevitably when I say how much that would cost, for my time and expertise, their eyes glaze over, they wrinkle their nose and tell me that they cannot afford that.
keymonster.bsky.social
I know everyone faces these challenges, but for artists and creatives we also have to and have always had to do all of this with the constant devaluing of our skills and abilities despite art being a thing constantly in demand in the world.
keymonster.bsky.social
Once you try and balance all of this, then you get to create …sometimes. But only if your brain can escape survival mode because despite bringing in money…. Everything else you need to live: food, rent, medical, transport, utilities… are all continuing to increase in cost, seemingly every month.
keymonster.bsky.social
Being an artist is a “real” job and takes so many additional skills beyond just making something pretty. You have to know how to manage time & inventory as well as have an understanding of small business admin & taxes, manufacturing, marketing, shipping and postage… domestic and international.
keymonster.bsky.social
Money doesn’t buy happiness, but it buys stability, which leads to happiness.

I’m very privileged to be able to do art for a living. I make more than I would working for someone else, but it alone is still not enough to live in our current world.
An extra $1300 a month would be game changing.

Another example of a UBI adjacent experiment working for the benefit of all people. Imagine what would happen if straight up UBI happened… universally.

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:
www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employmen...
Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."
