A short note just arrived from a friend telling me that the choice of Machado is “problematic” — but he did not specify. To be honest, I’ve only read a few articles about her, all of them praising her resistance to authoritarianism.

I’m grateful the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize went to Maria Corina Machado, who sincerely deserved the honor. Had it gone to Trump, it would not only have further diminished the meaning of the prize (think of war criminal Kissinger in 1973), but further embolden a narcissistic authoritarian.

Trump's unabashed ambition to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize is self-glorifying & degrades the significance of the prize. For this reason alone he is undeserving. But the fact that he has worked to diminish democracy (the opposite of what Machado has done), makes him even more unqualified.
