The caretaker government isn't allowed to pass new bills or make changes, appoint new people, enter into contracts or international negotiations etc during that period (unless something drastic happens) but it's meant to keep things running. I don't think we've ever had a shutdown like the US have.

Australia has a caretaker gov every time there's an election announced up until a new government is formed, so that regular operations and admin can still take place. Even during the 1975 Dismissal which basically fired the whole government, there was still caretaker mode to keep things running.

Buying into the idea that a country had some grand noble reason for existing is the kind of nationalist rhetoric that fascists and fundies like to use. Like calling it "manifest destiny". You have to be realistic about history

Not arguing that these aren't dark and dangerous times and the country is being run by idiotic shitheads, and definitely work has to be done to try to protect each other and mitigate the damage as much as possible. I'm saying that's entirely separate from "the point" of a country's existence

Was on holidays recently and going down to the beach early in the morning there was a social group of middle-aged men were just on their way back from a long walk on the beach, some with dogs, and then they bought coffees from a nearby cafe and sat in the park talking. That's how you do it guys.

My mum's dog Maggie likes to eat hibiscus flowers. Watched her eat all the ones in reach one day, stand on hind legs to try for the ones higher up, then she looked at my dog Chase standing next to her and I could just see here thinking "wonder if I could climb on him to reach the flowers"
