I try to pick up a book about an interesting topic in science or sociology and oops! this book on snake antivenoms is actually a memoir about the writer's mother. Was the mother bitten by a snake? No! Was she involved in antivenom research? No! Was she distant! Oh, yes; it was, in a way, a venom.

I dunno, man, as a gay dude, I absolutely do not understand this framing. You can just hang out with people and see if you get along and then if you like them you can hang out more and then maybe get into a relationship if that's what you want. It's not a game, it's just being people.

What Fr Dowling is doing here was not just "offering communion to detainees". A full on Eucharistic Procession is a really fucking big deal. In Catholic theological framing, those folks were the honor guard with the very great privilege of escorting Jesus himself to the detention center.

This would be like saying the modern English "slave" actually still holds the meaning of "person from Eastern Europe" because the word "slave" derives from "sclavus" because it comes from the Romans who kept Eastern European peoples as forced labour through their conquests. Like no it doesn't.

For context, the word "robot" just means "worker" in pretty much every Slavic language; it's usually derived from the word "to do" (e.g., in Polish, robić) or a secondary term for work (e.g., in Polish, robota). Saying it means "slavery" or "drudgery" in its modern usage is a fallacy of originalism.

I think this is a little overdetermined: 'robot' is just the word for "worker" in most Slavic languages, where it's derived from (for example) the word "to do", which is usually something like "robić" (as it is in Polish).

FWIW I've successfully introduced people to deep criticism via A Swim in the Pond in the Rain by George Saunders, which is essentially like a 250-level English course on the Russian short story form. It's not intro but it walks people through the experience of forming a critical reaction to a work.
