"why yes I do have exploding head syndrome, but luckily it only happens when I'm about to fall asle--" and then my head explodes as per the syndrome.

I don't think anyone should get their news from something called the "People's Dispatch dot org" even if it wasn't clearly a Russian propaganda outlet that quotes Putin's statements at length as fact. Maybe don't "do your own research" about the latest Nobel winner at a pro-Russia M-L rag.

omg and the bio page for Bella plays "Bella Ciao." you know what side of good that pastor's on.

This would be like saying the modern English "slave" actually still holds the meaning of "person from Eastern Europe" because the word "slave" derives from "sclavus" because it comes from the Romans who kept Eastern European peoples as forced labour through their conquests. Like no it doesn't.

For context, the word "robot" just means "worker" in pretty much every Slavic language; it's usually derived from the word "to do" (e.g., in Polish, robić) or a secondary term for work (e.g., in Polish, robota). Saying it means "slavery" or "drudgery" in its modern usage is a fallacy of originalism.

You know that thing where someone will write an "educational" article about a language and culture they don't understand and get it comprehensively wrong but it'll seem like really deep insight to Americans who can't speak any other language but English? Well, have I got the article for you.
The Origin Of The Word 'Robot'
'Robot' was the brainchild of the Czech playwright Karel Čapek, who introduced it in a 1920 play.

I think this is a little overdetermined: 'robot' is just the word for "worker" in most Slavic languages, where it's derived from (for example) the word "to do", which is usually something like "robić" (as it is in Polish).

Oh yeah really? Damn. I had no experience with her before other than knowing she's super popular on BlueSky. That makes sense, considering the tenor of everyone's interactions on this site.

I am constantly surprised by the staggering lack of self-control some people are displaying at the state of things. Good Lord, we queers were being arrested just for being out on the street thirty years ago; things are going to be very bad but AIDS was worse, and we still partied through the plague.

I'm begging Americans to understand that the political valences of a completely different country do not map on the Republican/Democratic party system in the US.

That's kind of the opposite of the thing that happened with Röhm.

Y'all see that shit where Ridley Scott's like, "Everyone else has no talent these days, I only watch my own movies now." And I'm like, Bitch you made PROMETHEUS.

And it also prioritizes the somatic reaction you have to a work, which is one of those underexplored avenues of artistic appreciation when it comes to books. How does this prose make you feel? How does you ear hear it? How are your eyes being guided on a page or in a paragraph? It's good shit!

FWIW I've successfully introduced people to deep criticism via A Swim in the Pond in the Rain by George Saunders, which is essentially like a 250-level English course on the Russian short story form. It's not intro but it walks people through the experience of forming a critical reaction to a work.

They needed the paper from its print runs to publish A Suitable Boy, which is a wholly unsuitable length.

"Oooh yikes, born queer in Appalachia? That's too bad. Should've been born queer someplace else, or, even better, been born straight."

The only people who could say this are people wholly convinced that it won't affect them.
koinskock.bsky.social
Yeah right? It's literally the bare minimum he could have done. It's not like this is deep history--the last murder happened like 30 years ago! These people are still alive! It still hurts!
koinskock.bsky.social
Oh I heard about that one--it sounds absolutely horrible. The duality of his output is incredibly jarring. Like AHS: NYC is one of the most incredible portrayals of the specific kind of trauma you develop as a queer person I've ever seen put to film, and then he does Dahmer??? Fucking whiplash man.

Thank you!! I tried to cover as many perspectives as I could. I'm glad it came out okay.

I think he gets a lot more shit than his co-creator, Brad Falchuk, because Murphy is gay, and think there's a read of his work that says, 'This is fine if it stays within the community, but you don't show this to straight cis people', but he has certainly steamrolled the community's concerns.
