yup i really dislike when i can tell an author is trying not to upset or confuse me lol. just tell the story and let me react to it!!

yeah, when i can tell the author doesn’t trust me to interpret things my own way at all lol… i think there’s a lot of anxiety in publishing rn and it’s understandable but it really poisons a book for me. they’re writing for the worst faith readers possible

also i think the real pet peeve is when i can clearly see the author reaching in and making the characters talk this way because they think they need to spell out their feelings for me. it feels condescending and baru wasn’t like that at all, so it worked!

i actually was thinking about it a little more and there is one book series that kinda had this but it didn’t bother me. it’s the traitor baru cormorant + its sequels and it worked for me because the protagonist is really intelligent and analytical, so it felt natural for her to think this way
