I don't get new ratings on Goodreads very often anymore, but they are pretty consistent. Maybe you should take the hint and read "Everything I Know About Zombies, I Learned in Kindergarten". I promise that it will be worth your time.

A classic case of irresponsible both-sidesism from the NYT. The story is that Trump and MAGA propagandists are lying about Portland to incite a conflict, not that there are different views of the matter.

Not sure how many people remember Andrew Denton, but his "Money or the Gun" weekly variety show included a different cover of "Stairway to Heaven" every week. They got released on an album subtitled "Twenty-five versions of the same song ... it seemed like a good idea at the time".

When Aaron McGruder put this out, it was clearly satire. Today, not so much.
Strip of Huey watching TV, speech emanation from the TV

Panel 1: Know what? I'm sick of apologizing. I'm not apologizing anymore.

Panel 2: I despise black people. So does every other God-fearing Southern politician. So does the majority of Americans that voted us into office. So don't try to crucify me for saying what most of America's been thinking! I MISS THE DAYS WHEN DARKIES KNEW THEIR PLACE.

Panel 3: WHEW! Just had to get that last immoral through out of my system. Now, let's put it behind us and build a better tomorrow.

use case for AI ... noticing that another researcher has linked "Joseph Hargis" to a record about "Jos Hargs" and suggesting that you take a look at that record as well.

But you can tell the trees where people blindly followed the suggestions ... errors compound, yielding a self-contradictory mess.

Yep ... properly used for pattern recognition and analysis, AI can be quite useful. Ancestry.com, for example, has a nice infrastructure of AI that helps filter through misspellings and poor scans to help you find the records you are looking for. That kind of pattern matching is an excellent...

One curious thing on this site about speaking out against the encroachment of LLMs is that inevitably you get accused of being anti-tech. I don’t hate technology. I’ve used machine learning in my own code before. But I also recognize that oligarchs are so hellbent on pushing this tech for a reason.

Were I to participate in any activities where an inflatable costume were required, this one would be high on my list of choices.
An inflatable banana costume, where the peel has been split in a fashion to make the interior of the banana appear to be a giant phallus.

Due to an upcoming colonoscopy, my food intake today is limited to eight bottles of Sprite.

This is not a fit diet for humans.

Floridians will be able to openly carry firearms while shopping at Publix, the largest supermarket chain in the state, the company said on Thursday. The announcement came after a state appeals court ruled that a Florida ban on people openly carrying firearms was unconstitutional.

This is an important point.

Everyone one of these people has been asked to leave their home, their family, and their job to work without pay bc of the shutdown. We're better off thinking of ways to make this backfire on Abbott than to treat them poorly.

It is clear to me that it is time for Ken Lay to step in to manage this business to its inevitable conclusion.
Here’s one indicatively tangled pathway through the morass of companies. Nvidia is investing billions in and selling chips to OpenAI, which is also buying chips from and earning stock in AMD. AMD sells processors to Oracle, which is building data centers with OpenAI — which also gets data center work from CoreWeave. And that company is partially owned by, yes, Nvidia. Taken together, it’s a doozy. There are other collaborations and rivalries and many other factors at play, but OpenAI is the many-tentacled octopus in the middle, spinning its achievement of ChatGPT into a blitz of speculative investments.
