Probably a hot take, but I’ve always hated the foot drying scene.

I hate the fujoshi bait, I hate how out of character L is during it, I hate the Judas metaphor that doesn’t even work with their dynamic.

It’s clear the anime only ever cared about the L and Light rivalry.

It wasn’t until I saw the stage musical (which fucking slaps) that I realized Light could have skipped the Russian nesting doll of Xanatos and forced Rem to kill L right when Misa was caught.

Fucking thank you! The story treats Misa as stupid for leaving a trail that got her caught, and here Light is flopping his narcissistic cock constantly! At least Misa tried to be discreet!

Also, strong arming Rem to do it is such an anti-climax 😒

Out of the five Avatar books I’ve read this is probably my least favorite, but that’s mostly because of how much I like those other books, and not because I dislike this one.

Overall City of Echoes was a pleasant surprise that gets a light recommendation for Avatar fans.

By the end the story gives the Zuko date some personal meaning to Jin, but it still mostly feels like a completely unnecessary and out of left field addition, that’s there out of obligation, because that scene is the only reason this story is about Jin instead of an original character.

Jin might be a mostly blank slate, but what little screen time she has does show personality, and it doesn’t fit with how she acts before or after that date.

The book even tries to smooth that over by her narrating that she’s trying to be more like her more out going best friend, to explain it.

Also, it tells what might be the best love story in the whole franchise… yeah, not a high bar, but still, it’s legit good.

Okay, now for the not so good… the prose is weak and amateurish, and undercuts what I think is an actually good story, with flat straightforward writing.

In the show Jin is mostly a blank slate, so she works well as a preexisting character to tell that story through.

They craft a genuinely creative and compelling story using the show’s events, like the Dai Li, the Joo Dees, the takeover, the Day of Black Sun, and even the Zuko date from Jin’s POV.

First the good; it tells of the story of Books 2 and 3 from that ground level human perspective.

It gets to explore the effects of the war from the people living through it, and being a refugee in Ba Sing Se where acknowledgement of the war is forbidden.

Well, finished the Avatar novel about the girl Zuko went on a date with, and ummm… I might have judged it too quickly

Turns out finishing a story is an important part of understanding its intent, and forming an opinion on it

It’s definitely got some issues, but overall I ended up liking this book
